Because I did today and have now just realized that you're advised not to in pregnancy, and now I'm worrying.

And yes I know that's probably a bit silly, but still...

Er, yep! Don't fret honestly - you'll be fine!

aloha · 09/11/2005 22:53

all the time. I don't think there is a problem with it. Who says?

MarsLady · 09/11/2005 22:53

Me, but then I ate anything I wanted to. My midwife told me that all things in moderation.

They don't tend to like to you eat things from chill cabinets cos you can't guarantee the temperature it has been kept at. Homemade is fine, cos then you can make sure it's stored at the correct temperature.

Try not to worry. You'll be fine and so will baby!

Why cant you eat coleslaw in pg?

Coathanger · 09/11/2005 22:53

I did. I was eating coleslaw when I found out I was PG with DS2!

I made my own and used shop bought mayo (which I was told is fine im PG) and washed the veg really well. And I didn't keep it for very long.

moondog · 09/11/2005 22:54

Why not??

Bloody hell, they'll be telling us porridge causes hearing difficulties next!

Don't fret. Really....don't.

QueenVictoria · 09/11/2005 22:54

oooh - marslady just finishing off that greenhouse thing i promised you yonks ago

emkana · 09/11/2005 22:54

Apparently there is the risk of listeriosis. It came from a salad bar at Sainsbury's.
If you google coleslaw and pregnancy there's loads of sites saying you shouldn't.

It does - if you jam it down your earholes moondog

MarsLady · 09/11/2005 22:55

Ta!

Hattie05 · 09/11/2005 22:56

I ate it! Along with runny egg (once in a cafe). And the occasional snicker (peanuts) as i just craved them.

I think my dd has survived pretty well considering

tralala · 09/11/2005 22:57

Yes, I ate it too!

colditz · 09/11/2005 22:58

Ha!

Well, I am 18 weeks pregnant and today I have eaten 2 dippy eggs, some stilton cheese, 2 large glasses of coke and have moved ds's bedroom round.

Too much emphasis is put on food. I know a pregnant 19 year old girl who was drinking beer in the pub because the midwife told her not to drink coke, but said NOTHING(!!!) about alcohol.

this would be funny if it wasn't true. I have had a very gentle chat with her, as she is a sensitive type and genuinely ignorant rather than careles, and she is a friend

QueenVictoria · 09/11/2005 22:58

oooh - i had snickers ice cream cravings when i was pg!

bossykate · 09/11/2005 22:59

yup i did. i think you're advised not to because it's a chilled prepared food - apparently there is a risk with that, but now i can't remember what it is! lol! left most of memory in delivery room it seems.

anyway, the best source of advice imho is the food standards agency (you can google) - it is good, well balanced, explained, non hysterical advice - imho.

hth and congratulations

joanna4 · 09/11/2005 23:03

I had the mad cow disease and major steak cravings to cope with so i am sure one lot of coleslaw isnt going to tip the balance like someone here says make your own.

aloha · 09/11/2005 23:04

See, you forget so soon! Risk of listeriosis is absolutely miniscule. Even less so with reputable brands. Relax.

princesspeahead · 09/11/2005 23:05

i'm not sure I'd eat anything from those salad counters - too many people sticking their fingers in (and I mean the staff!).
better to buy it in a sealed tub from eg where they sell hummous. or better still, grate an apple, a carrot, half a red cabb, half a white cabb, squeeze of lemon juice and good big squirt of hellmans.

yummy!

Hattie05 · 09/11/2005 23:08

I had one or two beers occasionally also! My mw told me to do so, (it was christmas) and she said if mother relaxes and enjoys herself then that is the best conditions for baby!

So i went straight out that night on a massive piss up...

Hattie05 · 09/11/2005 23:08

Only joking

But i did have the odd drink at parties and nights out.

edam · 09/11/2005 23:13

Coleslaw from a supermarket has probably been made with mayo from pasteurised eggs so will be fine. It's fresh mayo and anything else with undercooked eggs that is the concern. God, how I missed poached eggs when I was pregnant....

Bossykate's right, check out the food standards agency advice, it's expert, balanced and reasonable. Something like www.fsa.org.uk IIRC.

bossykate · 09/11/2005 23:16

here you go. it's called www.food.gov.uk - aaawww, i think that's sweet...

...told you, brain shrivelled by parturition...

emkana · 09/11/2005 23:17

Thank you, will have a look!

I don't know whether I did or not - probably not cos that would have been a bit exotic for me in the 70's

All I know is I was never told to omit anything from diet and had chips with everything way back then but I still produced 3 healthy kids.

Obviously I wouldn't being doing that with todays knowledge on healthy diets!
