Because I did today and have now just realized that you're advised not to in pregnancy, and now I'm worrying.

Ate everything I always used to eat - only found out about not eating prawns a couple of weeks ago (ds is now 2).

Is it all due to the very unlikely chance of contracting listeria/salmonella with ref to these foods or are you just more likely to get the illness being pg? Soz if silly question.

I do have the odd small glass of wine and tbh am sick of people giving disapproving looks when I'm dining out, not letting me have the wine would cause more harm to my baby!

You are more likely to get ill because your immune system is depressed in pregnancy, and also if you do get either infection it can be risky for the baby - either by causing a miscarriage or birth defects. Though they are extremely rare.

I got pg in France and spent the next two weeks eating seafood, pate, soft cheese and red wine.

I've eaten coleslaw during my pregnancy, cheese and tomato sandwiches weren't the same without it, nor baked potatoes.
If you read 'unpasturised' on the label, I was told it was okay. I've also had a little feta cheese, just a little, as others have mentioned -moderation.

My biggest downfall was the consumption of many litres of coke Have managed to stay off it for weeks now but it was all that I could keep down at one point and I absolutely craved it.

The one thing I did avoid though (thanks to advice on here) was a Mr.Whippy in the summer months. Wishing you a happy and healthy pg.

Haven't read it all but was it homemade? The one you buy in supermarkets is ok afaik?

My sister said when she was pg they encouraged you to eat liver, how times have changed eh?

I think the whole "what not to eat in pregnancy" is a bit mad too. Listeria is present in the soil and everywhere really so you are more likely to get it from an apple than a piece of Brie which has been tested a whole load of times and the risk is known and controls in place.

Hens in this country are only vaccinated against one type of Salmonella (there are hundreds) so there is a very small risk from eating raw eggs still. Theres a small risk from eating almost anything IMO.

Maybe we should all stick to canned foods for our entire pregnancy, fed to us in our bubbles as the air we breathe is bad for us too.

Yes, ate my usual healthy diet - which included coleslaw, properly cooked shellfish, mayonaise, pasturised soft cheeses.
You and your baby will be fine.
A friend of mine contracted Salmolnella during her pregnancy, despite avoiding everything you are supposed to and her baby was absolutely fine too.

I'm with cod et al, I ate everything you're not supposed to when I was pg. Runny egg, pink calves liver, mussels.. you name it, I ate it not to mention the wine. Have three perfectly healthy children. I think the whole food police thing is a load of cobblers.

Also DD2 got salmonella whilst I was pg with DD3. I think she got it from eating a live snail from our garden. I asked the doctor if there was a risk to me and he said no, don't worry.

I really don't think you need fret - most mayonnaise is pasteurised these days. So unless it was made with raw eggs and had been around for a few days, risks are very slight. like amny here I ate things without thinking and realised later that perhaps I shouldn't have.

btw apparently eating raw or lightly cooked cabbage could reduce risk of breast cancer (compared incidence in Polish women who eat it raw several times a week with those who had moved to US) - so the benefits may well outweigh any risks. Heard it on This Morning so it must be right !

I don't think it is 'cobblers' I think if your baby was damaged by listeria and you hadn't been informed of the risk you would be justifiably angry. But once you have the information then it is your decision what to do with it.

Well, I;ve just been out for Sushi for lunch and I'm 20 weeks pg. YUmmmy.

I dOn't live in the UK and the only advice here is a)don't eat raw meat, b) dont eat cheese made with unpasteurised milk (all cheese in the UE has to state if it is made with "raw milk") c) don't drink more than a few glasses of wine per week.

My midwife specifically told me not to panic about eggs, raw fish etc.

The point is though that you could pick up listeria from just about anywhere. My obstetrician had no truck with all the don't eat this or that stuff. I honestly think that there are people out there who would be out of a job if they couldn't think of something new that you shouldn't eat every six months or so.

And does anyone know what the statistical risk is or is it just a theoretical risk? Genuinely interested if anyone has the answer.
