Because I did today and have now just realized that you're advised not to in pregnancy, and now I'm worrying.

I'd happily eat coleslaw whilst pregnant, but not off a salad bar - I wouldn't eat anything from one of those, because anyone could have coughed and sneezed and done yukky stuff to it!!

eidsvold · 10/11/2005 03:15

I ate lots of potato salad with mayo cause at one stage that was about all I could keep down. I am sure I was told to be wary of homemade mayo but that reputable shop bought brands were pastuerised ( think?!) and so would be okay.

munz · 10/11/2005 08:26

no coldslaw but lots of cheese and onion sanrie filler which has mayo in it - and mayo on it's own - m/w said as long as it's shop bought pasterised it should be fine. bump seems to be doing OK so far.

no eggs thou - oh how I miss my soft boiled eggy! but the m/w said it's safest not to eat them. unless they're hard done - and well what's the point of that!

Serah · 10/11/2005 08:32

I ate poached eggs all through my pregnancy. My midwife told me that the chances of actually contracting salmonella from an egg were very unlikely - although the risk is there it is miniscule, so armed with that information I made a choice.

Dippy eggs and soldiers for me!!

marne · 10/11/2005 08:33

I eat anything i want including coleslaw, prawns and runny eggs. I think its all a load of rubish, eat what you want.

munz · 10/11/2005 08:34

it's more my DH not letting me - I would have caved by not (after all two dyas b4 I found out I was PG I was eating raw cake mix! lol) DH won't even let me have a dip (one single dip) in his runny egg! - so now he only has that when we're out! lol.

hotmama1 · 10/11/2005 08:34

Don't worry, I regularly eat coleslaw and I'm 29 weeks pregnant with dd2. I also ate parmesan cheese with dd1 - and then looked at the packet and realised it was unpasteurised! (oops)

In France, they eat blue cheese and loads of red wine, in Italy they eat Parma ham etc.

I take the view that if I am buying from a reputable supermarket then I assume I am O.K.

Serah · 10/11/2005 08:45

well, I would say have a runny egg when he's out Munz, but I won't as he's sorting me out with the windows disk

harpsichordcarrier · 10/11/2005 08:51

apparently if you use lion mark eggs they have been vaccinated (sp?) against salmonella (the chickens have) and so should be OK.

sweetkitty · 10/11/2005 08:53

I would eat coleslaw from a salad bar as well (it's the exact same stuff that goes in the tubs for prepack)!

Parmesan cheese is fine in pregnancy as it is a hard cheese therefore no risk from Listeria.

IME you are more likely to find Listeria on a ready meal (not really a problem if it's cooked properly), cooked meat, salad, fresh fruit and veg!!

Personally I've never not eaten anything in pregnancy and I'm a food microbiologist.

munz · 10/11/2005 09:09

lol sareh - am doing that for u today hon.

HC - well, I said that to the m/w and she said that only menas it's british??? so no - (but we were eating in a greesy spoons) might have to do egg's when he's out!

Serah · 10/11/2005 09:24

Thanks Munz

Is there anything you need btw? I am having a big clearout. As a minimum, I have a brand new with tags unisex next sleepsuit/hat/sock set (think its 6-9 months so one to put away) I would like to give you for your kindness.

Let me know

Chloe55 · 10/11/2005 09:24

They say you shouldn't eat it and I didn't at first but have since given in to cravings. I have been told that the majority of mayonaises used in coleslaws is pasteurised anyway - you'll be fine, don't fret.

flamesparrow · 10/11/2005 09:31

Since when was coleslaw off limits too??

dropinthe · 10/11/2005 09:32

Don't ask me-I used to eat Brie and Pate!

dropinthe · 10/11/2005 09:33

And coleslaw and fried eggs and red wine!

Chloe55 · 10/11/2005 09:36

It's all to do with eggs in the mayo Flame. I too have been nibbling on pate dropinthe

Chloe55 · 10/11/2005 09:36

Oh and the red wine!

flamesparrow · 10/11/2005 09:37

I had carrot sticks and pate for lunch yesterday ... was sooooooooooooo good!

munz · 10/11/2005 09:38

red wine what's wrong with that?

aloha · 10/11/2005 09:38

No, it's not the eggs in the mayo that is the issue here. All commercial coleslaw is made using sterile pasteurised egg, and anyway the egg 'risk' is salmonella (though salmonella has been effectively eradicated from British eggs by vaccination). The risk factor in coleslaw is listeria - though that too is a very small risk, and can be minimised by buying a reputable brand from a reputable store.

Munz - your HV is talking crap, but since when was that news? The Lion mark does indeed mean the hens have been vaccinated against salmonella.

Enid · 10/11/2005 09:39

yes apparently white cabbage makes your whole family die in pregnancy

dropinthe · 10/11/2005 09:40

I would only eat the Brie if it was melted to a slop-a tiny bit of pate here and there-the odd crumble of stilton at Crimbo and a couple of glasses of wine every other day or so!
Have 2 very healthy boys to show for it!
