what's best to drink/eat prior to 20wk scan?

know it's probably been done, but just looking for some advice on what to eat and drink to help baby move around during the 20wk scan?! i have mine next week and although we don't want to find out gender, would be good if we could get some pics of that 'area' and maybe have a guess!! Anyone found that certain liquids help with baby movement? or if baby wants to sleep at that point i guess there's nothing much you can do about it!

don't worry about it. they will make you cough or shake up your tummy gently during the scan to move the baby. there is unfortunately no foods or drinks that affect the baby's position. good luck!

thanks lilly13 that's what i thought! can't wait for it although nervous at the same time that something will be wrong....

i know how you feel! i was a nerve rack before mine... if everything was ok with your 12 weeks scan, the general rule of thumb is that this one should be okay as well... they'll probably tell you the baby's gender.. exciting! try to relax!~ hope it goes well.

I would suggest not eatting much, they press quite hard with the stick thing. That made me feel fait and dizzy, when she told me to roll onto my side to get the blood flowing again I was nearly sick on DH's knees! Poor man!

I had a lovely hot chocolate before my scan. The combination of the warm drink, sugar and naughty caffiene made baby very active indeed.

sunface · 10/05/2011 13:34

thanks ladies, think i might go for a milky coffee before hand with some sugar and maybe a sparkling water to wash it down! roll on next week, just want to make sure all ok, not seen a midwife since the 12week scan!

i ate as normal and by baby was as awkward and lounging around like he did at first scan... i was so nervous i wasnt sure if I could keep much down anyhow.

Icelollycraving · 10/05/2011 17:42

I had a can of really cold coke. The sugar & the coldness made him do somersaults lol.

OrangeGloss · 10/05/2011 17:47

I had a cold orange juice which seemed to work as it was doing acrobatics, but was too nervous to eat much. I had to have a shake at my 16 week appointment so there's always that option if it's still sleepy

PinkFondantFancy · 10/05/2011 20:55

Oooh thanks for starting this thread-I've got a repeat 20 week scan tomorrow because the sleepy bean wouldn't wake up last time! So it'll be a can of cold coke for breakfast tomorrow morning!!

Just out of interest, I have mine coming up soon and wondered if you need a full bladder for this one too (has the uterus moved from that area?)

nunnie · 10/05/2011 21:18

I had to have a full bladder, but it does vary from hospital to hospital you are best ringing and asking.

lolajane2009 · 10/05/2011 21:19

nope my didnt request it and i hadnt drank much as last time i was bursting

Icelollycraving · 10/05/2011 21:23

And some haribo tangtastics...no wonder he was flipping. Think I read it on another thread before mine.

mmmmm haribo...

sleepybump · 10/05/2011 21:36

thanks nunnie I will give them a quick ring :)

PinkFondantFancy · 10/05/2011 21:42

I am a huge haribo addict but I don't think I can do it at 7:30 in the morning-super early scan!! Mmm can't stop thininh about tangfastics now!!! Grin

joshop · 10/05/2011 22:45

Might want to pass on the fizzy drinks. My scan appointment letter said to drink a pint of non-fizzy liquid an hour before for a full bladder. I have my 20 wk tomorrow and am trying not to wet myself while I'm waiting.

jammyscone · 10/05/2011 22:49

I had my 20 week scan last week - fortunately the nurse overheard me saying to my friend that I wasn't going to sit down as I needed a wee too badly, and told me I didn't have to have a full bladder for this one!

urbandaisy · 11/05/2011 12:52

My little one was having a very lazy sleepy morning for my 20w scan so the tech sent me out for a coffee (first since November!) and some chocolate to wake him up. Still wasn't cooperating the second time so she sent me out again, had a coke and all the sugar and caffeine seemed to get him moving.

Oddly, his boy bits were the only things he wasn't shy about showing in the first place.

sunface · 11/05/2011 14:00

think i'll go with the coffee and chocolate route! scan at 10 in the morning so doubt i could face a can of coke at that time!
Although i'm sure i could force down a treat sized bag of Haribo tangtastic!! mmmmmmmmmm
