BFP with copper coil

I posted this in chat last night, but wondered if anyone here has any advice or experience.
I had the copper coil fitted in October and it was checked in February and was still there. I've had a few symptoms of pregnancy and have tested today and got a BFP (3 times). I am really worried. As far as I know, the coil is still there. I'm making an emergency appointment as soon as the doctors opens, but I don't know what they'll do from there. I've been getting period type pains for a couple of days, mainly on one side and I'm worried it may be ectopic and I have no idea what to do next. Does anyone else have any experience or advice? Thank you.

They may take it out, or sometimes they are left in. Both carry an increased risk of miscarriage though AFAIK

Not advice exactly, but my OH was conceived while his mum had the coil fitted, and he's absolutley fine. I hope it all works out for you :)

Thank you for your replies - someone said on the other thread that you can get pregnant on the coil but it prevents the egg from implanting. Not sure whether this is what's happened to me, but as I've had some pains, I think it's best I go to the GP anyway. Thanks again

Well, I went to the GP's at lunch time and he did another pregnancy test which was positive. He sent me to the hospital where I had a blood test, an abdominal scan and an internal scan. They can't see anything on the scan, but according to my dates it would be too early anyway. They tested the hormone levels in my blood and I have to go back in 48 hours to have another test and see whether the levels are going up. So, at this point although they have said there is or was definitely a pregnancy, they are not sure where it is or how far along it is.

Are they going to remove the coil, or is it staying?
I would have thought that it'd be easier to remove it earlier? I have no medical experience at all!

No, they didn't take the coil out. They said they would leave it in because it can sometimes do more harm than good if they take it out. She said that a pregnancy can develop fine with the coil still in there, although I've heard that there is a high risk of miscarriage.

I have to go in tomorrow for the blood test and then I'll have an idea what the hormone levels are doing.

My best friend's sister had this - she was told they needed to leave the coil in as taking it out would almost certainly cause miscarriage, however the coil staying put also increases risk of m/c. She had quite a stressful pg but then she is quite a worrier. She now has a very healthy 8 month old dd (her 3rd child - her dh has now had the snip!)

It's nice to hear stories like this, we're trying not to think of it as a baby yet as it's not confirmed where it is and my dates just add to the confusion and we don't want to get our hopes up, but it's still nice to hear that things can work out. We are very shocked at the moment and just taking things step by step. Hopefully will know more tomorrow.
