Not only do I not fancy eating, I dont fancy any food. This is my first baby, and I assumed I would eat for Britain, in fact I thought I would struggle not putting on too much unwanted weight. I dont feel sick as such, but have gone off eating.....is this a problem? At the moment its the only thing I have really noticed apart from feeling like I have a slight hangover most of the time.

Does any one else have this problem??

At the moment I just worry incase the baby is ok - sometime i wonder if its still in there!! (I had a dating scan at 5 weeks).

Roll on 12 week scan :)

Thank you for reading x

Don't worry - wait till you are out of the first trimester, and then you will be eating for Britain. I promise you :)

I didnt really get morning sickness, but like you didnt want to eat. DH whined at me if i didnt eat any dinner though - so we used to compromise and i would eat french bread and butter in the evening. Our baby is doing fine.

Now, you really cant stop me eating. At this stage as long as your eating something, then its fine (remember that some pg ladies at throwing up the majority of what they eat).

Hope your 12 week scan goes well :)

Hi Tonksy. I've felt exactly the same from about 7 wks. I'm now 12+4 and still can't face food much (eating very small amounts but feeling full and nauseus) You hit the nail on the head when you describe feeling like you're having a slight hangover.

I'm hoping this will pass soon, but like you, it's my first baby so I did worry and if anything, I thought I'd be struggling not to pile the weight on too! I've actually lost about 5 kilos - probably due to kicking the alcohol and not pigging out on junk food.

I had my scan this week and little one was in there bouncing around happy as anything so I'm sure all will be ok. Eat what you can. I'm finding fruit easier to cope with than anything heavier. Good luck x

lolajane2009 · 08/05/2011 20:16

totally normal. now at 21 weeks I am ravenous.

nearlyreadytopop · 08/05/2011 20:17

It was normal for me, constant nausea from 7 to 13 weeks meant I couldnt even think about food. Doc assured me that baby would take what it needed. I actually lost weight in 1st tri. During that time i lived on richtea biscuits, strawberry yop and water with lemon in it.
Dont worry it will pass.

EsmeWeatherwax · 08/05/2011 20:19

Yeah, normal, I never ate much throughout either of my pregnancies, was nauseous the whole time, and what I did eat was really limited in variety. Both dd's totally fine, and will eat anything put in front of them!

Purpleprickles · 08/05/2011 20:22

All sounds very normal to me. During my first trimester I only ate fizzy jelly sweets for quite a while or salad from the Morrisons salad bar. Don't worry I now have a healthy toddler who funnily enough does love a hairbo and chunk of cucumber Wink Good luck with the pregnancy Smile

hubbahubster · 08/05/2011 20:25

I went off eating from 6 until about 10-11 weeks. And I usually love my grub. About all I could tolerate was cheese sarnies. I wasn't nauseous or sick, just didn't fancy food. Now 29 weeks and baby is fine. It'll pass - I started to feel like eating veggie burgers (I'm usually a meat eater) around 11 weeks and then started to eat more normally from there. Just make sure you're having vitamin supplements and fruit juice, you won't do any long term damage. Remember, baby will take what it needs from you and leave you with the rest :)

jenga079 · 08/05/2011 21:25

Don't worry. I lst half a stone in my first trimester (& I was small to begin with) It's all back on now & I'm eating ALL THE TIME!

CitizenOscar · 08/05/2011 21:26

I was the same in the first trimester - can't remember the exact weeks though. I did try to eat what I could - bland & stodgy & in small amounts worked for me, like potatoes. I ate quite a lot of chips and I'm not normally a fan of chips at all! Flapjacks, toast, yoghurt - I think.

But I'm sure you'll want different things anyway. I took a pregnancy vitamin every day and that helped me not to worry too much about the variety of my diet.

After 12 weeks my appetite got back to normal (I'm now 34 weeks), which was a release cos I love food usually and found it quite depressing to go off it.

Valiant1 · 08/05/2011 21:33

I went like this from the day i found out i was pg, i am 19+5 and still not likeing food but have 4 other dc and if they see me not eating they start that they not eating so force my self to eat, i fing that cold toast with jam or crackers go down well. my m/w told me rather forcably to "just eat" lol i try! hugs hun and plenty of fluids x

Valiant1 · 08/05/2011 21:34

i mean find not fing lol

LDNmummy · 09/05/2011 01:05

I was like this, right up until about two weeks ago when my appetite started back up. Now I am 19+5 and definitely getting my appetite back. I am eating at least 3 square meals again (and snacking in between) and love enjoying a meals again. I still find some things a bit yuck (went off meat for ages and still can't really eat chicken) but at least I am eating ok. I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure you take supplements where necessary and try and get something small down when you can. The baby will take what it needs from your body regardless so it is usually ok.

Good luck!

lljkk · 09/05/2011 05:23

I found eating quite difficult in all my pregnancies (am normally a skinny pig!). Babies turned out fine.

figgygal · 09/05/2011 07:03

Yup I found out at 6 weeks and didn't eat hardly anything for 2 weeks though might have been shock the last 2 weeks have put on 4lbs as if I don't eat I get lightheaded then dizzy then queasy. Hoping it eases off soon and I can get back to normal and same to u

FluffyDonkey · 09/05/2011 09:19

I went through phases. Week 5 I pigged out. Weeks 6 - 16 I ate little and threw most of it back up. Weeks 17 - 18 ate normally, but smaller portions than before. Am now 19 weeks and still being a bit sick so I have gone off food again (it's very har dto make yourself eat when you know it's probably going to come back up again!)

ct148 · 09/05/2011 09:57

I was exactly the same. This is my first baby too and in my first trimester I completely lost my appetite. Didnt really get any sickness though. I was just about forcing myself to eat small amounts of food - but I really didnt want to. I researched it online and loads of websites said it was completely normal in the first trimester, that it was something to do with the hormone progesterone which slows down the digestion process. But once I was into my second trimester it improved no end. I'm now 24 weeks and I genuinely am eating for England! So it doesnt last! It's just a bit of a worry at first, and I used to feel really drained and tired because of it.

MrsTittleMouse · 09/05/2011 10:01

I was the same for my first. I had to basically force myself to eat for the first two trimesters - it was maddening to be accused of dieting by the OB when I didn't gain weight!

I developed a major cake habit in the last couple of months, but didn't ever make up the weight that I "should" have put on. My baby was over 8lb, so it didn't seem to do her much harm. :)

tonksy83 · 03/06/2011 09:42

Hello, first of all thank you so so much for all your comments.

I had my scan and it showed I was a week ahead of what I first thought, so I am 13 weeks now...very nearly 14. Scan we great thank you.

As for eating, I still get thats horribly aftertaste, but I am enjoying food more. It seems I crave something and have to have it...many apples, but last night for example I had to had a chicken burger!!!! NAUGHTY I know!

Anyway because I am eating more I am not too worried, plus it seems pretty common.

Thank you again - really really useful.

Yeah totally normal, I lost loads of weight up til being about 20 weeks and I had no sickness or nausea of any kind (smug grin). Now 23 I'm at my original weight and just can't stop troughing.

I've been craving apples throughout as well, and anything apple flavoured including cider argh

xx

Halgirl · 04/06/2011 10:30

I'm exactly the same, can't stand the thought of food, the smell can't even open the kitchen cupboards! I'm 12+6 and hoping it's going to wear off soon. I've lost about a stone and a half. Am forcing down some cereal in the mornings and living on plain jacket potatoes so I at least get something inside me. Nightmare!!!

Jellyboobs · 06/06/2011 20:47

This is so helpful everyone, thank you! Was starting to worry and feel like a kid myself, six weeks pregnant and only wanting to eat white or yellow food, no meat, no hint of fat or grease (except loads of salted butter too MotherPanda)
Really glad it's normal and I can carry on until it passes.
Purpleprickles at my work there is a drawer with a bag of fizzy jelly sweets in that gets replaced by my boss every now and again...she's going to start noticing that she's spending A LOT on haribo :o

TerrysNo2 · 06/06/2011 20:55

I am the same, I don't ever want anything and eat when I feel dizzy / sick rather than hungry. I lost half a stone in the first 4 weeks but since 12 weeks I have been eating more, just very very fussy.

I think its very normal!

thegingerone · 06/06/2011 21:55

I'm 16+4. At about week 5, I went off food completely and I LOVE food. My taste buds have gone crazy and everything tastes wrong! The smell of any food made me ill. It's getting a bit better now. Now I don't FEEL sick at the thought of food, but it dosn't excite me either. I've eaten more junky crappy food than I'd like but some food is better than nothing. I'm taking vitamins (like my previous pg) but this time I feel they're more of use.(Less guilty than I'm missing something) It'll hopefully get better for you. Try not to worry. Drink plenty of water/juice/etc (if you can)

BTW I also go through phases. I've had a noodle soup phase up to week five. I'm now in an apple phase. No such thing as trying to tell my body to eat balanced diet. I could just eat apples all day, but nothing else.

Mum2be79 · 06/06/2011 22:01

Can't stand food either. I have developed an aversion to red meat and tea and I can't eat until 8 or 9pm. Even then it's small, grazing stuff.

samanthax2 · 09/09/2017 19:07
