Cough, cough, wibble :(

I'm 22 weeks and have got an awful cough, one of those annoying back-of-the-throat tickly ones where the more you cough the more it tickles and the drier it feels which makes it tickle even more.

I'm reigning in my fear that coughing will hurt Peanut but bow have a very real fear that I will cough so hard that I'll pee myself. It's actually giving me serious wibbles that I'll be in town and I'll cough hard and will need to go buy new pants. The smell of pee and a damp crotch is not a good look on a woman just shy of 30. Plus it's doing my head in! Cough-cough-cough every five flaming minutes!

Anyone know of any home remedies? Normally I'd just reach for the Buttercup syrup.

I know you pain, i had a terrible cough cold the whole works when i was 33 weeks pregnant, i also worried about hurthing bubs but she is perfectly healthy .. and when i say it was a terrible cough i mean coughing up blood the works!

have you tried honey and lemon?

Oh poor you - We should make our own brand of fragrances. Pregnancy, by Mumsnet. it would include favourites like damp crotch, of course.

Peanut is fine! he/she will suck all the goodness out of your body, and you'll get whatevers left over. Possibly why you're feeling so rubbish! I was ill over christmas with all that horrible flu floating around.

I LOVE buttercup syrup, but seeing as thats a no no - you could just have some Glycerin based stuff, They do them in Honey and Lemon and Blackcurrant at boots, but i think all the supermarkets do them. They will not hurt Peanut :)

If you want to do the DIY trick - I always drink hot blackcurrant squash. Ribena is best :) it's really soothing and full of vitamin C. You could do it with orange as well if you prefer. Or, pop some honey and lemon juice in a mug, poor boiling water over and enjoy (my DH would say to add whisky, but perhaps peanut wouldnt like it). These are all quite good for flushing things out of your system as well.

I also sucked on boiled sweets and barley sugar. A tiny bit soothing and distracting.

Hope you feel better soon :)

A spoon full of honey? Try not to swallow and let it run down the throat (it's what singers do). And, wear a pad incase of accidents. I was violently sick at about 10w pg and wretched so hard I peed (luckily it was on the bathroom tiles but I felt so rought dh cleared it up for me - bless him.) I was mortified! (but too ill to care too much)

I've been guzzling honey and lemon, it makes little madam super active but that's about it.

Someone needs to invent pregnancy-friendly medicines, they'd make a bloomin' fortune! :)

Just remembered, as well as honey and lemon, my Granny used to give us warm milk with golden syrup which was yummy and worked.

Lots of x-posts! Thanks for the great answers everyone :)

I'll check Boots tomorrow and I'll nick some of DS's juice for a hot orange.

There's a Covonia that the pharmicist OKed for me last time I felt like i was hacking up a lung! It's not the usual stong stuff but something without menthol. That, and the honey and lemon that people have recommended
Hope you're feeling better soon x
