Beach holiday week 28-30?

Hello all,

We have booked a holiday for two weeks, leaving when I will be 28 weeks. The doc said this is ok. I am starting to have slightly cold feet though, as we'd be on a Croatian island, which sounds blardy marvelous to me, but possibly not the closest you can get to emergency, etc. I really want to go though! And it is not too much beyond the 28 weeks, until when they say it's perfectly safe to travel. There will be an air flight, some car riding and a ferry.

So, while I have an ok from a doc, I was wondering if any real life mums had experience of traveling in this period of pregnancy, and it all went ok / you enjoyed it, etc...

Thanks!

Hi I flew and wasaway in Egypt from 27 to 28 weeks all fine. Is Croatia hot? Egypt was between 36degrees and 40degrees the whole time we were there.

Make sure u stay hydrated and cool! I sat out in sun but made sure kept body cool and bump even cooler, I used a cold wet flannel. You womb heats up 1 degree warmer than u.

All went ok and I got a drs note to say I was fit to fly which I was asked for upon my return. Make sure u take your notes too. I loved the holiday and was just extra cautious about things u ate, hygiene, keep cool, move about in flight and drink more in flight, etc. You'll be fine if u have been problem free and given the thumbs up from dr.

I also went to Thailand from11 to 13 weeks all fine. You do find yourself more wary of things but that's a good thing. Enjoy your holiday!!

Hi Jimmy, thanks for that. Croatia is pretty hot, though not as much. I would say up to 36 degrees. But thanks for the advice, I will make sure to have plenty of water / stay in the shade. There'll also be a cool sea too ;-)

Your advice has been very useful, especially re. heat, and I will be sure to be extra careful, though some fresh fish etc. would be very good for the bump, I am sure! I am SO looking forward to it, was just getting a little bit cautious about the island bit.

I have to admit I was more worried in Thailand as was so early on but both trips were uneventful thankfully. I did get caught out on each trip right at the beginning and not listening to my body. U can get to a point where you are hot and normally you would have plenty of time to seek shade/pool/cool drink but stupidly I didn't listen and ended up overheating on both trips which u do much quicker when pregnant. Mind u, u will only do it once on that holiday!! If you do overheat just get yourself somewhere super cool for 15 mins or at least laid down with an ice cold bottle of water. When I was in Thailand I grabbed hold of some random backpacker and held on to him and drank his nice new fresh bottle of water! Poor bloke...should add I am a flash packer not a back packer so luckily could escape to the air con.

In Egypt our room boy kept asking what I was doing with the flannels until he caught me round the pool! At first I thought I would look stupid but it was a god send and the midwife said it was the best thing for bump...despite my patchy belly tan ;-)

Tell u what I did notice, babies waking times changed and was awake whilst I was out in the sun so I wonder if it was the bright sunshine? Might be stupid theory mind! Was no problem but was so lovely to be laid out on a sun lounger hands on bump feeling every movement...something I can't get away with during the day normally in the office. Rather distracted me from my book tho...

Regarding eating fish, it's a cautionary word but midwife (and even our holiday rep) said if you are more at risk (eg pregnant) only eat fish if you are in a Coastal area otherwise the fish may not have been stored/transported in the correct conditions. But it's generally ok if in a beach hotel.

Oooo enjoy your trip! Wish I was back on the beach!

Hi Fretty, I went to Egypt at 28 weeks as well and it was wonderful - so lovely to be able to relax in some sunshine and enjoy a last child-free holiday with dh. Go for it!

Ooh, it sounds wonderful! I haven't gone anywhere exciting whilst pregnant, but I did take DD to Tunisia when she was 6 weeks old!
Have a wonderful time!

Hi with my DD I was 26-28 weeks and went to turkey and it was great it was a well deserved rest I had no problems, I just made sure I kept cool, watched what I eat and got up and walked around a lot on the plane.
This time I'm going to turkey again and ill be 28-30 weeks so ill need a doctors note but I'm excited and can't wait for the break!

Dear FrettyBetty
I'm not sure where you are going exactly and when, but I'm from the coastal region there and you should really not worry. The flight is a max of 2.5hrs, the ferries are air conditioned and very comfortable, there are bars to get a drink from or something to eat and depending where you are going the max you will be on a ferry us about 2- 2.5hrs ( I assume you are flying to Split). In June/July it should not be too hot, August is hotter but even then its not too bad, especially on the islands where there is a breeze. Fish will be freshest on the islands so you really dont need to worry about that. There will be some medical services on the islands, but maybe not a full on maternity hospital which are in the bigger towns. If you let me know where you are going to and when I might be able to offer some more advice.
I'm going to Florence at 28wks and I'm wondering if a normal bikini is still ok, I'm already huge but I dont want to have to cover up just because I'm pregnant. Are people offended by pregnant bellies on show?

JimmyChoo17 · 12/05/2011 21:25

newmumtobe I have been really self conscious since being pregnant and bought a tankini to cover up in Egypt....however when I got there I thought sod it I'm away and no one knows me so let it all hang out in a bikini! No nasty looks or bad reactions to the bump in fact I got lots of nice comments and looks, think bump looks better out of clothes!

My only problem was my sudden growth spurt on day 2....only 1bikini fit me from then on and I also had to use it as a bra in the end!
