Requesting a growth scan

Okay so this is a little bit AIBU and a little bit "how do I ... ?" and a little bit a WWYD.

DS was a big baby born at 40 weeks, 9lb 3oz with a massive head (37.9cm) and I know women the world over give birth to far bigger every day but he was pretty much my capacity weight load. It took 3hrs of pushing to get him out, I had a secod degree tear, and they were on the verge of ventoussing me. Part of it was his position (back to back) and part of it was his size vs the size of my insides.

I'm 22 weeks pregnant with DD. She measured roughly on the 75th percentile at her 20 week scan. According to the MW subsequent babies tend to be bigger but the consolation is that they tend to arrive a little earlier so don't necessarily reach that full potential weight (if that makes sense), she did also say though that it's impossible to predict and varies from lady to lady.

I'm dreading another big baby and my placenta is anterior again which I know does slightly increase the chances of posterior positioning during labour. That big is "meh" though, the size is the main worry.

Has anyone asked their MW for a growth scan late in the pregnancy? I was thinking of asking for one around 30+ weeks, I know they're not 100% and just give an estimate. If you did ask how was your asking dealt with? I get the distinct feeling they'll tell me where to go :(

I had a growth scan late into pregnancy due to MW concerns re "giant baby". It incorrectly predicted the weight as DS2 as he was much heavier than thought, but on the back of the scan I was offered a date to be induced, to my regret I declined!!!!!!!!!

I'm just thinking she won't be very receptive to my request. My bump measurements with DS always put me ahead by at least 4 weeks and they told me it was normal, I get the feeling they'll say the same thing if it happens this time. I told the MW my concerns at my booking in and she dismissed them by telling tears mean nothing because they can be repaired and if baby was too big they can just "pop you down to theatre and whip it out the easy way".

My friend measured large for dates from 22 weeks pregnant (can't remember exactly how much too big)... she was sent straight to consultant to be monitored and had several growth scans to check size of babe...they predicted weight to be 9lb something, he actually turned out to be overdue and over 10lb! Ouch! She didnt tear though fortunately. Sorry - didnt want to worry you with that story, but I reckon if babe is still measuring big further down the line, then say you're concerned and you want more monitoring... your midwife is there to provide you with reassurance so I'm sure if you told her you're really concerned, she would act on it. Failing that, you could go for a private scan at around 30wks? I know its costly, but would hopefully give you peace of mind...or at least let you know what you're dealing with for the birth. Good luck!
