length of baby at first scan - how long was yours?!

Just had my 12 weeks scan (sure of dates because of conception problems). Great to see baby and heart beating but otherwise it was all pretty quick and perfunctory. Midwife/scanner said baby looked right for the dates and, when I asked, said he/she was 5.5cm long.

Now I know it is ridiculous to compare but my first baby was 6.6cm at this stage so 5.5cm seems quite little to me. Since I've been feeling quite sick and haven't been eating that well, I'm now wondering whether this has influenced the baby's length or whether 5.5 seems normal.

Anyone else know/remember how long their baby was at this stage? I'll try not to feel paranoid if every other Mner was carrying a metre long baby by 12 weeks

They never told me either, i can not see it on my scan notes would it be on my scan picture?

Wallace · 07/11/2005 19:03

Both my scan pictures have 12cm on them, but I have no idea if that is the length of the baby! I think I was 15/16 weeks for both.

Just looked at my notes and for the 12week scan it says crown to rump length 52.4mm. Nothing was said to me about it being small so I guess that sort of measurement is fairly average.

They never said anything to us either. I remember a length being on the scan picture and I did ask if this was baby's length but was told it wasn't and that it was a figure I didn't need to concern myself with...TBH I wouldn't be very concerned with the length at this stage as things change so much during the 9 months that you could worry yourself for nothing. I think mw usually concern themselves with the size of baby from around 5-6 months, in my experience this is uaually when they started to check that baby measured well...even then at one appointment my dd was showing to be small for the dates given but there wasn't any concern. LOL dd was 9lb 4oz ...Relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

I had mine last week when I was 13 weeks and it was as follows - I don't know what it means so if anyone can enlighten me:

Presentation - HC 8.5cms 13w 1 dy
BPD - 2.3 cm 13 wks 2 dys
CRL - 6.8cms 13wk 1 dy

SoupDragon · 07/11/2005 19:48

CRL is crown-rump length I think

Hi Geranium

I wouldn't read too much into it. 5.5cm is normal and I wouldn't worry about not eating well at this stage, there is still plenty of time for her/him to catch up. Just try to eat heathly food and take your antenatal supplements.

My first was 7cm at 12+3 and weighed 7lb 14oz at birth, my second which is due in 5 days was 5.6cm at 12+3 and, after a scan on friday (39wk), they estimated her weight to be 8.5lbs

Also, my friend's baby was 7cm at 12wks yet only weighed 6lb 4oz at birth.

Congrats and good luck with your pregnancy.

Geranium - mine was 5 point something cm at 12 week scan. Can't remember the exact figure, but think it was 5.5cm

My dd was 11 cm at first scan!

Calmriver · 15/11/2005 09:22

11 cm at first scan and 6lbs 2 at birth!

coppertop · 15/11/2005 09:28

I've just had a look at my maternity notes. At my 12-week scan the baby was 5.3cm long. I've still been given an appointment for a growth scan at 36 weeks to make sure they're not too big so your measurements must be about right, Geranium.

geranium · 15/11/2005 09:51

Thanks. I went for a booking appointment with the midwife yesterday and she said 5.5cm looked fine. According to her chart it corresponded with 11 weeks and 6 days so only one day out from their reckoning of 12 weeks. I explained that I'd wondered because ds had been 6.6cm at his 12 week scan but she just said that was impossible and not on her chart and that I must have got it wrong so I just shut up after that!
