Hi i am between 10 and 12 weeks pregnant at the moment (don't know exact dates due to midwife issues).

I cant get comfortable at night (which i expected) unless i lie flat on my stomach. is this safe for me to lie like this?

Congratulations!
I'm not sure on the safety aspect but can say lying on my tummy was the only way I could sleep pre pregnancy (plus legs up in the air!). I bought a full length body pilow, about £25 from Argos, and 'trained' myself to sleep wrapped round it so I didn't sleep on my tummy. Although I have spent most of my 1st & 2nd trimester fighting with the pillow I'm now so knackered at night (36+4wks) I sleep with it reasonably comfortably plus with my head on 3 pillows! I wish I'd gone to the expense of a dream genii pillow, but then again, it looks like it would have limited me to sleeping on one side. I like a good fidget throughout the night so my pillow has worked I guess. Although the OH might say otherwise, I properly punched him on the nose one night while trying to get comfy!

Yup, your baby is still tucked down behind your pubic bone and if you're comfortable like that and getting good sleep, do it. Your body will soon protest when it's not the right position for you.

I'm 15 weeks and I still sleep on my tummy, although I find it more comfortable to have a pillow underneath rather than directly on the mattress.

I also have a metre long soft toy shark from Ikea like this which is great for supporting bumps and sleeping on or against as you get bigger. Much cheaper than a special pregnancy pillow too, I suspect!

Oh I miss sleeping on my stomach. Im 29 weeks and as a PP said, if I roll onto my tummy in my sleep both my body and baby protests and I get woken up !
I sleep mainly on my left side as I was told by my MW that its the safest way to sleep but its killing my hips ! I cnt sleep on my back becuase it makes me dizzy within minutes. Occasionally I roll over onto my right side for some relief. I havent invested in a pillow yet but am sorely tempted as Im not sure I can cope with the hip pain for much longer.

I think at your stage of pg you should be fine.
Just being nosy, you say you are between 10 and 12 weeks, why dont you know exactly lol ?

Congratulations!

You are so lucky! Sleeping on my tummy was my favourite sleeping position pre-pregnancy but I haven't been able to do so since week 6!!! (week 34 now so really missing it!).

Oh God I really want to take a metre long toy shark to bed with me, tucked under my arm, glass of milk in the other hand. For sheer comedy value.

Actually I want a crocodile.

ShowOfHands · 05/05/2011 10:13

Oh I must have this for taking to bed.

Cattleprod · 05/05/2011 11:00

Oh I love that croc! I could have the shark one side and the croc the other. DP would have to sleep elsewhere!!

lolajane2009 · 05/05/2011 11:07

lol i have the shark and croc in clothes as i am an overgrown child Smile. I use their elephant to sleep on under my bump. I wake up on my bac every day but the onnly way I can get comfortable at 20 + 6 is to sleep partially on my front on my left side. If I try to sleep on my right side I tend to lose my balance, which is always fun...

howabout · 05/05/2011 11:41

Inbetweener you need a pillow between your knees to deal with the hip pain but an elephant or crocodile may be even better. Any tips for dealing with nocturnal 21 week old bump who wakes you up for a spot of gymnastics? Doesn't bode well for the future!!

Thanks for all the advice :)
inbetweener i have moved to another area in the last few months and never got round to moving my doctors. So when i found out i was pregnant booked an appointment at the midwife for at old docs who refused to see me ... have now registered with new doc but cant get appointment for another 2 weeks.

I have had a scan at the hospital last Thursday as i was having bad pains this said 9-4 then but my baby was all curled up so could be another 2 weeks on.

Will finally get proper dates on the 20th well fingers crossed :)
