Negative test but missed period?

Hello, hoping you can advise me!

I'm new here and think I might be pregnant, despite missing my period (am usually very regular). I've now done two tests that have both come up negative (meant to be super-sensitive ones). Symptoms that I have at the moment (assuming I'm around 3 1/2 weeks) are crampy-ish tummy, hungry, super-tired, quite cranky (not so new!) and a bit bloated. I've had A LOT of surgery over the past two years as a result of a hideous pelvic infection that nearly killed me, and as a result, needed a lot of reparative surgery to clear up the mess. I'm very "lady bits" aware, so am on the alert for anything new or wierd.

So, having tried for two months, now think I might be pregnant, which is amazing and exciting, as it wasn't clear at all that I'd even be able to. But I can't tell 100% if I am! How long should I wait (and how many more home tests should I do) before I go to the doctor? I should also mention that I'm new to this area, having moved up from London, as I got married in February so still registered down in London. Sorry, this is long, but thought I should explain a bit of history. We're so keen to be get started.

Thanks very much :) x

is that three and a half weeks since last period or ovulation?

buttonmoon78 · 05/05/2011 08:47

Ok. So when was your last period?

Are you 3.5 weeks post last period or 3.5 weeks post probably conception?

If it's the former then it's entirely possible that it won't show for another few days if you are pg. A lot of people on here have had pgs not show until 6-7weeks pg.

I'd leave it for a few days and test again. Most gps won't worry about a missed period and negative test until 2 periods have been missed, though with your history they might take more interest.

Get registered with a gp soon anyway - whichever way it goes this time, I'm sure you'll need a gp soon!

Good luck.

Thanks for speedy replies! Last period was 4th April and because we were planning, I'm pretty sure conception was around 16th April. So I guess 2.5 weeks post conception therefore...

Ok, so I'll tortuously hang on a few more days and see what happens by the weekend. So much for super-sensitive tests! I've always been impatient so nothing new there!

Thanks v much for advice, will keep you posted!

So you've missed your period by about 3-4 days? I know it's hard, but wait until the weekend. Try again on Saturday am, first wee of the morning. See what happens!

lolajane2009 · 05/05/2011 09:02

I'd say wait too. sometimes you can get early negs but poss further on.

ClaireBear54 · 05/05/2011 09:12

Roger that, will do! Eek! Thanks v much. Mumsnet is fun! Suspect I'll be on here all day now.

I'm back. Have now done 6 tests (4 first response, 1 clear blue 1 boots) and all negative. Went to doctor and the test there also negative. Had a blood test. Also negative (waiting for phone call back as I type). Is it possible that it's still too early to tell (am now a week late) as I understand that there are two different types of blood tests that they can do in a lab? Am totally paranoid now that there's a horrible sinister reason why it's coming up negative (despite the fact I've NEVER missed a period yet except after surgery). Very grateful for any thoughts if anyone else has experienced something similar....:(
Thanks!

could still be too early tbh... lol i cant say if my early tests would have been early as I only tested on day 45 ish

I don't trust the super sensitive tests. My last period was 1st April and next was due 25th April. I was on holiday and had Norethisterone with me to stop the period (I asked if it would affect a baby as planning on getting pregnant but thought I wouldn't as thought we would have problems). I was told to take a test 3 days before my due period which I did and it showed negative. Exactly two weeks later my period hadn't started despite stopping the Norethisterone 8 days before and the doctor did a test there and then and said the pregnancy test was positive. I even had a look to make sure!!!!

I don't trust the 'pink boxed' pregnancy test if that helps!

I tested every morning from day 28 and finally had a positive on day 39!!! Good luck, hope it's a BFP!!! :)

Well, after feeling dreadful this morning, am now bleeding, so looks like a false alarm. Am so sad and disappointed and bit confused as this is the first time I've ever been late, but maybe because I was willing everything to go well, I somehow jinxed my cycle into going wonky. But this is also a pain, because now I'm all out of sync so will have to start my opk from the start as my dates are going to be wrong. Boo.

Thanks all for your kind thoughts and reassurance, will keep you posted if anything ever happens. Otherwise, it's IVF for me as this path was never going to be smooth and is proving thus so far but I guess just not meant to be. Hey ho, onwards and upwards :)

Hi everyone! TTC#1 and as im now CD31 and (I think) 16dpo i think im going to test. I had a rocky month this month as spotted heavily CD16-18 (took this as ovulation spotting) but since then I've had all the right signs; mettalic taste, increased white CM, increased BBT, sore bbs, tiredness, bloatedness and now the constant need to pee! Gosh - isnt all this fun!!!!

Anyway, Thinking about taking a test but think I'll need a sensitive one. What's best and which should I avoid? Thanks xx

Cupcakelu · 11/05/2011 16:42

Opps sorry I forgot to add how sad I was for you claireBare54. I've had that sinking feeling when ur so sure and then AF shows. Look forward to next month with plenty of nookie. I've been making my hubby drink pomegranate juice as I've heard it boosts his swims energy!!! always worth a go. Good luck

Many thanks Cupcakelu! Really hope it all works out for you (signs look good so far). I did every test around it seems and suspect they're all pretty similar. But to cover all bases, you could try Clear Blue, First Response and also Boots' own....just to be sure! Good luck and thanks for kind thoughts. DH brought me beautiful sunflowers tonight to cheer me up which worked! So will have fun next month trying again! x
