Can a sweep be effective IF you are not yet dilating??

Had a sweep today, I'm 40+4 with my first. MW said that I am 50% effaced but not yet dilating. Cervix is still firm but baby is engaged, she said she could just about feel babies head and the bag of waters....Haven't experienced any cramping since it was done.

Got another sweep booked for this Friday, when I will be 40+6....but I'm not that hopeful it'll come to much??

Has a sweep worked for anyone who has been in a similar position?

my midwife said sweeps work when your cervix is 'ripening' (bleurgh! sorry!) and it releases the hormones? to tell your body to start proceedings for labour, so it should be done before dilating but poss won't be effective if your cervix is still firm?

My dcs are a few year old so I apologise if this info is a bit rusty and some one comes on to correct it!

Good luck though!
