4D scans - anyone had one?

Hi,

Today I had my 20 week scan and I was in there ages as the baby wouldnt get into a good position for some measurements (Also the lady doing it was a trainee so was probably slower more thorough too). At the end when she asked if I had any questions I didnt want to ask about the sex as I felt I had been in there ages (I was in a good 40 mins) and there would probably be loads of people waiting. Also the knees were high up so I wasnt convinced if anything could be seen in that Dept anyway.

I have been looking on line at a gender scan and it is the same price as a 4D scan so Im thinking I may as well go for the 4D scan as I get more for the same money (£80)

I know plenty of people dont find out before and they cope with not knowing whether to plan for a boy or girl (ie with things like names, clothes, colour of items such as car seat, paint for nursery etc), but I really wanted to know so I could start saying he or she.

Has anyone had one? Is it worth it? Or am I just better off waiting another 20 weeks or so to find out the baby's gender when its born?

Thanks

I had one a few weeks ago and found it amazing, not only does it confornm the sex but we could see our little girl yawning, touching her nose and even smiling! We feel closer to her before she's born, facial features were really clear, I still can't stop looking at the pics. SO yes if you can afford it I'd recommend it. x

JeewizzJen · 04/05/2011 20:55

I had a 4d scan at 28 weeks and it was absolutely amazing! I am so glad we put up the money for it, it was worth every penny to see my baby in such detail, it really helped me and my OH to bond even more with him or her even more. We haven't found out the sex - although it was very very tempting! Like Boogiemumma I can't stop looking at the pics either, just amazing.

I am booked in with Babybond to have 4d gender scan - had my NT with them at 13 weeks and had 4d viewing - good but as baby is still tiny not lots of detail, however I could appreciate how much better it would be at 20 weeks CAN NOT WAIT to find out and see junior again!!

lizandlulu · 04/05/2011 21:16

sorry to hijack the thread, but can i ask, jeewizzjen could you not tell the sex from looking at its face? i am booked in for one, but dont want to know what it is and someone told me that i would have to find out as it would be obvious from its face.

JeewizzJen · 04/05/2011 21:30

Nope, I'm absolutely none the wiser from looking at the face! I did wonder whether we'd be able to tell from that, but honestly, I could imagine either when looking at our pics. Perhaps others have a different experience though!

JeewizzJen · 04/05/2011 21:32

Sorry, I meant to add - do make sure you tell them you don't want to know though - at mine they told us to look away at the appropriate time just in case (they did femur measurements etc as part of mine, so they did look down that end!)

I had one with my DD and it was amazing, lovely pics and dvd to keep/treasure but make sure have soon as I had mine at about 28/29 weeks I think and baby not as much room to move about so you can't see as much - they will advise you when is best. I knew I was having a DS and later a DD from amnio results and we both loved being able to pick names as we were then waiting to meet 'george' then 'ava' not just a baby but it is a personal preference as I haven't waited to find out and I did say to my DH should we wait for this one seeing as it will be our last but he wants to know again!!

sleepybump · 04/05/2011 21:42

erm, perhaps I'm missing something, but what is the 4th dimension in this scan?Blush

...pictures a sci-fi scan showing what the baby would look like at [pick age here] in the future...Grin

I haven't had one but a friend recently did at 34 weeks and whilst it was good she said she would have been better to have had it done earlier. Best results are between 24-32 weeks when there is a bit more space. Good luck and hope you get the flavour you want!

SelinaDoula · 04/05/2011 21:58

4th dimension is time! (So its a moving picure/video)

sleepybump · 04/05/2011 22:31

thanks SelinaDoula! - I had no idea the 3D ones would be static, I'd just assumed they were all in real time!

Bunnyjo · 04/05/2011 23:17

We had a 4D scan at 29wk (am currently nearly 38wk pg with DC2). We booked it with Babybond and it was a fantastic experience. The sonographer was excellent - we had a growth scan done at the same time (he was, and still is, measuring big) and we were in there for close to an hour just watching 2D and 3D images of our baby. It was a really good bonding experience for our 3.8yo DD too.

Sleepybump - the difference between a 3D and 4D scan is with a 4D scan you will come home with a DVD of your baby moving in 3D. With a 3D scan you only get pictures. The scan will be done the same way - i.e. 3D real time motion - and, whilst you are being scanned you will see 3D real time images of your baby, but won't have them as a momento, unless you pay for the 4D part (where they burn the video images onto a DVD)... Hope that makes sense?

Thanks for your responses. We have decided to go for it :-)

Im currently nearly 21 weeks so I am going to ring up in a bit and make an appointment.

The place Im going to has 3 levels of 4D scan. Bronze Silver and Gold. We are going to go for the bronze, but we dont get a DVD with that just colour photos, so is this just a 3D scan then that they have just said its 4D to try to make it sound better? You do get a DVD with the Silver and the Gold, but I dont think I will watch it that much and I am just as happy with the pictures and seeing the detail of the baby. Plus I only thought about it as it was the same price as a gender scan so thought why not.

Im booking mine tomoro for 28weeks :) I cant wait, we get pictures printed, CD with pics on it and a DVD too Grin Cheapest around here is £164 so not too bad. Im so excited hehe Grin

I booked one at 25weeks the earliest my clinic would allow for a 4d scan - you could prob get earlier if you wanted. However, we had to go back as they couldnt give an estimated weight until 26weeks - just in case this was something you were interested in, but thats a few weeks away not sure if you can wait that long! also we resisted finding out and lots of speculation about boy or girl but we def can't tell - they are careful to avoid that area if you don't want to know! Also sounds a bargain!

dollyshouse · 07/05/2011 13:13

I had mine in liverpool same place as coleen rooney cost less than £100 for four printed pics, dvd and cd-rom with ALL pics taken on it too!
