Uncooperative baby at 20 week scan

I've just come back from an attempt at my 20 week scan but because my baby was in its favourite position crouching face down, they couldn't do most of the checks. They gave it literally 5 minutes and gave up - didn't give me any opportunity to drink something sugary or move around or anything, just told me to book another appointment. So I'm booked in to try again next week but I'm just wondering, does anyone have any experience of still not being able to do all the checks on the second appointment? I'm just a bit worried that this is going to become a weekly occurrence, and given that I'd already worked myself up into a bit of a state about this one, I could really do without the stress of doing it over and over... I appreciate that this stress is entirely self-induced though!

That sounds unusual - often they send you for a walk then try again a bit later. Sorry I don't have any experience myself but I'm sure it'll be fine. Maybe have a small coffee beforehand! Grin good luck x

DD did that at my 20wk scan. She was curled up, face down. They kept smacking her with their scanning wand and she'd unfurl, yawn, stretch and curl back up again. They sent me away again and said to make another appointment. I assumed they were just busy and couldn't do it that day.

I've just had a 20wk scan with ds (gosh it's weird typing that) and he was very cooperative. At one point the woman said 'could you just stretch your legs a bit baby' and he did.

Totally different babies evidently.

Sorry, my point being yes it happened to me, no don't worry about it.

Yep that happened here! Couldn't do all they wanted at the repeat so had a third one and then 3rd trimester scan wasnt far off so we just agreed to leave it. Tbh once we'd confirmed major organs etc were fine and baby was healthy/viable I wasn't that worried about what they couldn't see.

Hehe princess I bet if I had a coffee first it'll go to the other extreme and do breakdancing instead Grin

neverkiss thanks, that's really helpful. I take it your DD was being more helpful the second time they tried?

my little man wouldn't take his thumb out of his mouth so they were unable to do the checks they need (although when i asked the next time they said they were unable to see cleft palate on a scan so slightly confused as to what they actually look at). next time he was waving!

Just fine 2nd time round. She was just asleep and comfy the first time round.

yes, they struggled with mine but cos I am part of a study they do seem to take more time, so there was lots of tipping me upside down on the bed, then going for a walk, getting my bloods done, trying again, lying on my side, poking it myself......just as well I didn't want to know the sex as she said she had no idea even after half an hour :D its got to be a boy to be that lazy and awkward

gembeam · 03/05/2011 21:07

I had to go 3 times for my 21 wk scan as DD was just giving the arse! At least I got three different sonographers saying they were quite sure baby isn't a boy.
The 1st appointment I got prodded A LOT and sent on 3 walks and blimey was I uncomfortable the next day. On the 2nd appointment the sonographer just knew baby wasn't going to budge so sent me on my way. Eventually on the 3rd appointment, with some persuasion, we got the long awaited 'profile' they were after. I think the 40 minute drive to the hospital (OH v.impressed at 3 trips!) just sent baby to sleep each time as we booked around the times she would usually be carrying out her aerobics!
Don't panic and fingers crossed you'll have a better time on your next try x

I only had the one scan but it lasted for 2.5 hours, I was sent for 3 walks and fizzy drinks and eventually they got everything they needed. I would have rather gone back another day as my bump was very tender for a few days afterwards from all the prodding and poking.
