Going on holiday, in Devon, at 35 weeks

We're staying near Torrington. Both my previous DC arrived early, albeit not that early or I wouldn't be going(!), so I want to know where the nearest maternity unit is just in case. Is anyone from around there and can advise?

Also what would you take, just in case, anything or nothing? I'm hoping we might have a bigger car by then so I was thinking I might stick the baby car seat in the boot, I figure anything else we should be able to get hold of relatively easily at short notice. I'm hoping it'll be like taking an umbrella out so it doesn't rain Grin. Obviously I'll take my notes.

can't advise but in similar position, in that we'd agree to holiday with our kids before baby arrives in July so are going five hours away to Boscastle, Cornwall with our three boys at the end of the month when i shall be 33w. I asked dh what he thought about taking carseat last night, and he said yes if we can fit it in! Grin

We've got a 5 hr journey too. I'm not looking forward to that bit! If we don't get a new car sorted before we go, looking increasingly less likely, then we won't be able to fit a carseat in with all the luggage. I guess we'd just have to buy a new one and leave some luggage behind if the baby decides to arrive down there LOL.

i would expect my parents would come down if needed or something as dh would have to go home with the boys possibly?! who knows Grin

I imagine Barnstaple would be your nearest. We're going away at 32w (pg with twins) to Cornwall but we're 15miles from Royal Cornwall hospital so that's why I've agreed to go. Make sure you have it programmed in the sat nav! Have a lovely time x

Valiant1 · 03/05/2011 17:55

when do you go i am going to devon cliffs in june i will be 26 weeks and am soo worried about soemthing going wrong as we are going by train and it 400 miles away from home! now dh said that am even more worried!!!!!!!!

Lollyheart · 03/05/2011 18:00

I'm also going on holiday when I will be 37+ weeks with dc4 Grin

I'm going to take my hospital bag, notes and car seat just in case as my ds was 2 weeks early, thankfully my mum is coming with us so have childcare if I go into labour.

Hope it all goes well and your dc will stay put until you get home Smile

North Devon District Hospital, though a good 30-45 min, drive is where I was born! Think it is the nearest. I visited my parents in Devon at 38 weeks. Still preggo (OD) lol. Great hospital, lots of ppl from out of area book there.

Enjoy xx

Ooh how interesting! We are off to Devon next Monday too, when I'll be 35+5 so this is a very handy thread! :) Mind you we are going to be in the South and not the North so then again not sure just how helpful I'll find this after all!

I have to say I am packing my hospital bag and making sure that is in the boot with my notes just in case!!

Thanks very much Loopymumsy Obviously I'm hoping she stays where she is but you just never know!!

mouseanon · 04/05/2011 13:14

Thank you for the replies, will hit google and get directions now, esp good to know it's a good hospital.

Maybe I should pack an emergency hospital bag too, with just the bare minimum stuff in it. Though if it's born that early I doubt we have any clothes that would fit the baby!

We'll have friends with us, so in some ways it would almost be easier, at least I won't have to spend time calling round friends to find someone available to come and look after the kids before we can go to the hospital, or worse going into labour when DH is at work 2hrs away so having to find childcare and a lift to the hospital from someone prepared for the fact baby might arrive before we get there (previous fast labour). I think the extra journey time to the hospital would be balanced out by being able to just up and go!

Eeek!

We're going to Devon when I'm 30wks (we live in Norfolk). I'm taking my pregnancy notes and that's about it. I wonder if I should be taking anything else? DD was born at 39wks so it's never crossed my mind to worry tbh.

vallinnapod · 04/05/2011 13:20

I am going to stay over in Birmingham for two nights (to watch cricket...) when I am 39 weeks! I am from London, giving birth at UCH...I can't imagine getting there from Birmingham will take a whole lot longer than from our house if I go into labour!

This is several months away and I already reserve the right to change my mind nearer the time Grin I just couldn't imagine anything worse than not planning to go, feeling fine and bub arriving 2 weeks late!

vallinnapod · 04/05/2011 13:21

Travelling by train I should add...I can't bear more that 30mins sitting at the moment (22+4) so the thought of any longer sitting in a car makes me want to cry!

NeverKissPigs · 04/05/2011 13:23

When pg with dd I went to London for a week at 37 weeks and took nothing bar my notes. I really am quite stupid I've decided. Why did I do that?

mouseanon · 04/05/2011 13:35

I wouldn't worry at 30 weeks. You should always take your notes of course but it's unlikely anything would happen then. I'm not really worried about 35 weeks or I wouldn't be going, I just think it's worth being prepared. At 37+ weeks I would be taking a full on hospital bag LOL.

No I'm not worried about going at 30 weeks but then it did occur to me that I was similarly unmoved at 37-38 weeks which was just ridiculous looking back. She was born the week I came back from being on holiday.
