19 weeks pregnant... Am I putting on too much weight

I've put on a stone already!!! Is this too much?
I'm obsessed with weight gain and I hop on the scales everyday. I know a lot of you recommend not to get on the scales but I fear if I don't I will lose control and end up being one massive mama!

I'm 5ft 1 and my bump is really big, people don't believe that I'm only 19 weeks. I walk nearly 3 miles a day but i'm starting to suffer with backache. I'm not really in to the whole yoga business and I'm thinking of getting a pregnancy fitness dvd- can anyone recommend a good one?

I'm finding it really hard to find any nice maternity clothes especially maternity underwear. I know it's all supposed to be about comfort but I don't feel very sexy in big baggy tops and leggings... I feel more like Waynetta Slob everyday. I have weddings coming up in July and there doesn't seem to be any nice formal maternity wear. If only I had Victoria Beckham's money and stylist!

I've put on 11lb at 18 weeks, carrying twins - but I was about a stone overweight before I got pregnant. I think the more overweight you are to start off the less you will put on.

As for maternity clothes, I have got some fairly decent bits from ASOS and Very, everything else seems so frumpy. Went to get fitted for a new bra in M&S today and found out maternity bras are hideous. My size hasn't actually changed so I'm staying in my nice wired bras for now (she did tell me I should come out of wires but they're not digging in and still comfy). Can't find a decent pair of work trousers anywhere - I don't want to start wearing jersey or cheap shiny trousers just because I'm pregnant!!

For dresses for a wedding Seraphina has nice dresses - expensive though!

I am 5ft. I had probably out on that much at 18 weeks although I didnt weigh myself. I was a size 8-10 before I got pregnant and am now wearing size 14 maternity clothes. I wouldn't worry as I think being short it has to go outwards. I am now 27 weeks and am forever being told I look massive( gee thanks) so I think its just how it is. I am not overeating so not much I can do about it.

boba82 · 02/05/2011 18:20

Glad I'm not the only one. 21 +2 and put on 11lbs. Actually been eating less food so don't understand how I'm sooo massive already. I'm 5'10'' and usually a size 10 so finding it quite hard to deal with Blush and dreading to see how I look at 36 weeks!!!

argylesocks · 02/05/2011 18:27

i put on at least that much by 20 weeks, probably more. I was small to begin with, size 10, so I started showing really early and ballooned a bit.

I'm now 37 weeks and have put on just over 2 stone and I think that should be about it. I was freaking out about how much I've gained but nothing I can do about it. I eat healthy (with my acceptable fair share of cake) and get as much exercise as I can so I think some people just put on more weight early on.

I keep hearing about people who only put on 5 pounds by 20 weeks and I just don't see how that's possible unless you were heavy before!

superv1xen · 02/05/2011 18:32

well you are halfway through, maybe you will only put on another stone? which would only be 2 stone in total which i think would be ok?

i have had 2 dc, my first i piled on the weight as i ate for england Blush and finished the pg at 3 stone over my usual weight. i looked terrible as like you i am quite little and slim (five foot 2 and size 8 when not pg :o )

so with DC2 i was more careful, i watched what i ate and exercised (swimming and pilates at least twice a week) and only gained about 20lbs in the whole pregnancy. i had only gained about 4lbs at 20 weeks.

but i do also think every pg is different and if you are exercising and not over eating loads then you are just gaining what you are "meant" to iyswim.

lolajane2009 · 02/05/2011 18:33

5ft 2 here and put on 4.7kg till week 19. I only weighed 60kg at the start though so my bump was sizable.

superv1xen · 02/05/2011 18:34

and sadly us shorter ladies do look bigger when we are pg - grrrr Angry

and twats always feel the need to comment. you should say to people, well i'm pregnant, whats YOUR excuse ;)

bishboschone · 02/05/2011 18:57

I know super vixen. I work in a shop where we have regular customers. Everyone has an opinion on my bump. It is really hard to be nice about it as I really want to say feck off!!!

lolajane2009 · 02/05/2011 18:59

I haven't had that yet at 20 weeks but that might be because I have a constant scowl on my face atm and I think people think I've just regained part of the 7 stone i lost pre pregnancy.

otchayaniye · 02/05/2011 19:15

In my first pregnancy I'd put on 1-1/2 stone by your stage. By the end I'd put on 4 stone. Had my daughter at 8 months due to preeclampsia and she only weighted 5 lbs. Believe it or not, I threw up every day for 8 months. I just ate more than a threw up.

Towards the end I felt crap. It was in the tropics though and hot, but carrying around 4 stone really made a difference to how I felt. And of course, I had sudden preeclampsia.

This one I lost a stone and still have only put on one pound by 6 months and am a size 8. I do have a very prominent bump though. I have the same level of sickness (chuck up some of dinner without fail) although my appetite is much lower so I'm not driven to eat all the time. Baby measuring bang on the 50th. I feel great (apart from after dinner) and much of it I think is down to how much less heft I'm carrying about.

otchayaniye · 02/05/2011 19:16

oh, and I'm short and petite too. Any weight really shows up. Took me two years and demand feeding throughout to shift it! Ironic that I lose the last bit as I get pregnant again.

PrincessScrumpy · 02/05/2011 19:37

Put the scales in the loft and enjoy being pg - once baby is 6 months old then you can get them out again.

I'm 20w pg with twins and have just bought a dress in Monsoon for a wedding - much nicer than mat wear! They have maxi dresses that will be fine and I got a 50's style dress that fits.

recklesspixie · 02/05/2011 19:54

I'm 20 weeks and have put on a stone, like you I walk everyday and watch my weight, I still have slim arms and legs so I don't really care. I do pregnancy pilates too- great for strengthening your back. Found some nice materity clothes this weekend in small boutiquey maternity shops so quite expense compared to high street but worth it. Lots of people just buy a size or two bigger than normal in ordinary shops but that just looks wrong on me, makes me look bigger and they don't hang right-I'm 5ft 4. It's the one time I want to look nice cos my boobs and belly are huge and ive no control over them! Some of the tops I bought from the boutiques were from 9fashion - a Polish company, just found them online, you can click to translate through google, they've lovely stuff, worth a look, much nicer then high street maternity sections. www.9fashion.pl Also asos have nice stuff-check out their clearance section-you can get French Connection dresses less than half price!

sleepybump · 02/05/2011 20:48

I'm 5ft and 16weeks and I've put on just over a stone (which I did really quickly because I just could not stop eating in that first couple of months!) I'm usually a size 10 so I'm buying a few size 12/14 clothes to get me through! It's good to hear someone else is at the same stage as me :)

Silly thing is I kinda like having a 'beautiful bump' (which is already HUGE) until I got a 'hey chubby' from MIL which she really meant as a joke and then felt really awful for actually saying outloud! But it really very suddenly made me uncomfortable and want to cover-up with hubby's big jumpers (which actually made me look even bigger TBH) - I've gone back into my 'show off the bump' clothes again now (ie tshirts that are starting to get on the tight-side under a loose shirt) though I'm still in two-minds about the next time I'm in public (desperate for people to see the bump not think I'm hiding chub!) - Would love any tips on this if anyone has any! :D

With DD I put on 16lb in 16 weeks, 3 1/2 stone by the time she arrived. I was only 8 stone 5lb beforehand and went up to nearly 12 stone. I'm about 5'2".
