Hello... new here and need advise
I'm currently at least 10wks late for period and managed to bugger up taking the pill. DH works away and I went to visit him, taking pill with me obviously... got home and forgot to take pill out of bag ( it was with my pain killers for bad back so only thought it was painkillers in there)
Started another packet of the pill as I thought I had left first pack with DH... when I found first pack I realised I had missed 2/3 days worth of the pill including the last day that I was staying with DH.

In late Feb I was admitted to A&E with chest pains and given morphine so wondering if this has mucked up my system or failing that cancelled out the pill... No Preg test was done in hospital.
I've done 3 home tests and all -ve yet still no period...I also have 'mild' PCOS so this has in the past years stop-started my cycle but not over the past year/18months at least esp with the pill to regulate a lot more.

I so far haven't started taking the pill since the end of Feb in order to increase chance of coming on... so far nothing... well, there was a single 'sneeze' of a period or what would be the very start or end of one i.e. just a little spotting/brown marking at the beginning of March and nothing since then.

As for symptoms...boobs don't hurt. No sickness. No more PMTish than normal yet no period although had mild period pain and bloating ( not something I would normally have)...DH managed to come out with ''are you sure you're not preggers; you look it''...as I changed clothes last week ...nice! Having said that my tummy has got bigger although me thinks this is one too may pies...I seem to have put on 6lbs in 3months but all on my tummy area!!

I've spoken to my GP who has told me that I would have had a +ve result by now and to leave it another 4-6 wks before she will do anything... only thing is that will/could take me to 15wks gone and not a position I want to be in as I have a back injury so going to full term would knacker me for motherhood at the moment....something I feel still in two minds about.

Any advise, suggestions etc would be great

thanks

P.

Maybe GP is assuming the PCOS is delaying things - which may be an interpretation but doesn't help you understand what's going on. I wouldn't be impressed - if you are pregnant and they do nothing for so long then you've missed the window for the nuchal scan (if you'd want it) and/or you're losing time to work out options if you're not completely sure you'd continue the pregnancy.

Is there a different GP you can see? Think I 'd make another appointment and go in telling them why you need to find out for sure. It should only take a blood test, so not as though you're asking for the moon on a string.

(and some women never get a +ve on a home pregnancy test - it's unusual but not unheard of...)

galwaygal · 29/04/2011 13:36

Your gp is wrong, some women would be getting negative tests by 10 weeks due to the hook effect on tests and as tangle has said though it is uncommon some women never get a positive on a hpt.

If you need to find out urgently, then don't wait the 4-6 weeks. By 12 weeks pregnant the uterus is able to be felt above the pelvic rim, so it only takes a quick feel of the tummy by a doc or midwife to determine if your tummy feels pregnant (does need a professional to do it though!)

I would not bother about asking for a blood test (some women have negatives on these too despite being pregnant!)

I would suggest seeing a different GP in about 2 weeks and asking them to feel your tummy to see if they think the uterus is enlarged or not. If it is then they can send you for a scan.
I hope you get the answer you want.

coccyx · 29/04/2011 13:39

i would have thought GP should be doing a blood test at least. not fair to wait another 4/6 weeks

Poppsbythesea · 29/04/2011 18:34

Thanks ladies! I think I'm due another trip to the GP for tests aplenty...I'm up for blood tests and tummy feeling...
Am I right in thinking thirst is some sort of symptom? I managed to down 4pt of oj and lemonade in the pub last night and just couldn't quench my thirst ( i generally drink 4pts in a hole day let alone an hour!)
Also my minimal sweet tooth can't get enough chocolate so Easter has been good timing....maybe it is all choccy fat!

Will report back in the week.

BeeMyBaby · 01/05/2011 08:04

I know its probably not what you want to hear Popps, but I know for my PCOS if I put any extra wait on at all, my AF gets very far apart (ie it can be as good as 5 weeks or as bad as only every 3 months if I become overweight). In the first trimester I think you are only meant to put on a lb in weight (I have been looking at this for my own benefit) so the weight gain doesn't necessarily mean pregnancy.

On the other hand I definitely agree with others re getting a blood test. I'm surprised the dr wasn't initially willing to do this.

MrClaypole · 01/05/2011 08:11

If you are "10 weeks late" you could actually be 14 weeks pg as pg is dated from the first day of your last period. You do need to know ASAP so that if needed anti natal care can be arranged. In most areas you have your first scan and midwife aapt at 12 weeks pg.

THink you need to press your GP for a blood test and scan asap!

pippitysqueakity · 01/05/2011 08:16

When pg with DD2, all home pg tests came up -ve. In fact with her don't remember a +ve test...but I was, Dr felt tummy etc and really, just KNEW.You need a more sympathetic GP or go to clinic. You need to know.

Poppsbythesea · 04/05/2011 23:30

Hi Ladies!

Well I've been to see a different GP today and to be honest I don't think I've even seen a less interested person in my life... she was more interested in the contence of what ever was rubbing in her eye than what I had to say...I'm sure if she had attempted a smile she would have cracked!!

Anyways, I explained the above and she came back with ' well I don't really understand the issue... if you have done 3 -ve test then you're not pg!'

Brilliant, thanks for that!... so where's my period?!

She's told me to do another home test tmw morning and if that is -ve then I'm not preganant end of story!... she then said I should come back 'in my own time' ( not sure who elses time I was going to use!) and speak to someone about re starting the pill.
I asked her if she would run a blood test, apparently not, these are used only in ' extreme cases'... not sure what this is then!?

I spoke about PCOS and she said that it could be that that is delaying things...just a case of waiting to see what happens.... I'm assuming that she doesn't mean a baby pops out in 6months time!!

I'm getting slightly pee'ed of with it all tbh....I've now got another Clear Blue teset, GP told me that the high street tests are no different from the ones hospitals use...
Am somewhat concerned that as I'm taking upto 150mg of codiene, 1200mg gabapentine, 10mg diazepam per day for back injury and noone seems to think that this could be an issue should I be preggers!
Granted I still haven't got the sore boobs ( i should know, I'm a fitting consultant in a bra shop!) extreme tiderness; well I'm knackered all the time.
I'm having really graphic dreams, feel on edge all the time, well up at most TV shows and pee lots more as I'm not able to quench my thirst ( i nornally go on 2 glasses of water a day, bad I know, but now I'm drinking loads of the stuff!). Also still got this sweet tooth thing going on .... I'd normally rather have a piece of cheese than a piece of cake but at the moment I can't get enough cakie, biscuity goodness...

Anymore advise out there?!

pippitysqueakity.... really interesting to know about that, thank you... so it's not just me going mad... false -ve do happen!!!

Cullen... have you had any news?

Also, it's might just be mind playing tricks or fat tummy but if I lean too far forward whilst sitting or bending down my tummy really aches until I stand/sit up straight again...

Really sorry Popps :(

pippitysqueakity · 05/05/2011 15:13

Have been trying to rethink this... all home tests -ve with DD2. Had the sore boobs, grumps etc(nothing new there...) Just knew is not helpful I know, but personally always on time each mth so 3/4 days late v unusual. My Dr didn't ever do retest or blood test, just asked details and with DD2 felt tummy. Maybe different...you need to know tho'(obv!!).
Have you thought about Marie Stopes or Family Planning Clinic?
Hope it works out the way you want it. (Sneaky hug)

vallinnapod · 05/05/2011 15:32

First off, are you trying to get pregnant?

FWIW, I came off the pill after 11 years with the view to getting pregnant. All that time on the pill I had regular 'periods' - remember these are artifical bleeds not periods as they are not the result of an egg being released and not being fertilised as the pill supresses ovulation.

Any who, periods never returned. Turns out I have PCOS (only symptom is the cysts on the ovaries and lack of ovulation.)

For me it led down the road of fertility drugs, Clomid and Letrozole, which didn't work and then IVF (currently 22+5)

If you just want to regulate your cycle acupuncture and a low GI diet can help, along with Metformin from your GP. If you are not concerned about getting PG then maybe just go back on the pill but bear in mind that when you do fancy it it may be a bit of a struggle.

Hope this helps.

She3po · 05/05/2011 15:53

OP, when I came off my pill to ttc dc1 it took 6-7 months for my period to return. It was a frustrating time as I had pg symptoms (apparently related to the hormones leaving your system) and ended up doing endless tests (all bfn). However, I was pg within one month of my period returning.

If it's any consolation, I found gps to be pretty useless too. They were actually right in my case that my body would return to normal in time, but it doesn't really ease your concerns at the time your going through it.

Hi
I am new here and looking for advice:-)

I have one daughter and am now about 5.5 weeks pregnant.

I have had far too many miscarriages to think off-some quite late in the first trimester so i had an early scan done two days ago which just showed the GS so far. I also had bloods done for beta HCG and again today. I have to ring tomorrow to find out the results and be rescanned end of next week. I have also started baby aspirin as i did this with my daughter under the consultant's advice.

Any one know what the hcg levels should have done withing two days?

Many thanks:-)

sabreuse · 05/05/2011 17:25

Sorry-i didnt mean to troll your thread! Getting used to posting on mumsnet!

galwaygal · 06/05/2011 11:51

Poppsbythesea - Sounds as if you are going to just go with the not pregnant, and wait for af, as the doctors have recommended.

Looking at your symptoms I hope that the doctors have tested your for diabetes, as your symptoms of extreme thirst etc need checking.

Next if you did not start testing for pregnancy until you got to about 6 or more weeks late, then you could have the hook effect happening, in which case you need to dilute your pee before testing (cheap test will do the job).

If you don't get af and you are still concerned then go to GP complaining of stomach pain..... this way they will feel your tummy and if your uterus is enlarged they will send you for scan.

GP's really don't get the pregnant/not pregnant stress. But pain they will generally investigate further especially if they think it is appendix. (unless you get a gp who just wants you to pee in a cup and check for UTI and pregnacy, that will be more difficult to convince them to feel your tummy).

It is true you are not likely to be pregnant with negative tests, but you need to know for peace of mind.

I hope you get an answer soon.

Poppsbythesea · 06/05/2011 13:03

You sound pregnant to me!!! I am no expert but your symptoms are sounding like it!!!! If you were pregnant how far along would you be??? Can you ask for an ultra sound??? Could you afford to pay for one at somewhere like baby bond???

Tangle · 06/05/2011 14:16

How frustrating :(.

I don't know where you are, but have you looked to see what your nearest Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit is like? The ones local to us require a GP referral, but there are some that run drop in clinics - if nothing else they should be happy to give you advice over the phone (can just take a while to get through with some). I'd have much more confidence that I was getting advice from someone experienced with the variations in early pregnancy from an EPAU - a lot of MW's don't have detailed knowledge of this area (they only tend to be involved from the 2nd trimester) and many GPs have less knowledge of pregnancy than would be ideal.

Poppsbythesea · 17/05/2011 10:16

right, GP still not helping.
Did a 5th test, defo -tive so i'm sticking with that and that the pill has given me 'false' AFs....
Going to look into injection or coil now....
Damn body!!
Hope we're all good. x

You sound positive to me Popps
Can't you go back and demand a blood test. Be strong and say it has been ages now with no period (not a delayed one NO period at all) and that you demand a blood test to find out conclusively if you are pregnant or not. Tell them you definitely need to know because if you aren't you need to find out conclusively why no period. DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER and good luck! Smile Big hugs. xx
