Are very jerky, twitchy movements normal?

I'm 29+5 and my baby is SO active, he/she wriggles and squirms and kicks morning, noon and night. This is very reassuring most of the time but many of the movements are very jerky and twitchy, almost like spasms as though he/she's having a fit. Is this normal?

It's possibly hiccups, DS would get them and DD had them for the first time (that I felt anyway) last night - like rythmic little twitches/jumps? It's from them practicing breathing, even though they don't actually breathe, and sometimes they swallow little amounts of amniotic fluid, it gives them the hiccups.

If you're at all worried speak to your midwife for reassurance though :)

One of mine felt like a bagful of ferrets, I struggled to believe there was really only one baby in there
He is still a very restless type Grin

Yep, hiccups.

Thanks, glad to hear others have felt the same with normal babies! There are definitely hiccups going on in there but also other less regular, twitchy spasmy movements that are more random and variable. I read somewhere about immature nervous systems not being able to control things properly yet, so maybe that's it.

My daughter asked me exactly the same question, she is feeling the hiccups but also movements that feel just like you described, :)

dd had spasms and jitters in the womb (or so if felt) and all seems normal now at 2yo; tho I watched her close for anything after she was born because I was not entirely convinced early on. x

I am getting this too-almost spasmodic movements-don't remember this with my other two. Still get kicks from this baby but a funny shifting, shaking movement too!

i don't remember it in the womb but my son had lots of crazy twitching/spasms in his first few weeks of life. (he's 2.5 and fine.)
