A complete nightmare!

This is me and my wifes first baby, and to be honest, it has been a complete nightmare for my wife. My wife is currently 20 weeks pregnant. For the first 15 weeks, she felt sick all the time, day and night, then about 4 weeks ago, she started to get pains in both hands and feet.

At first, her feet were worse, and she could only walk for 10 mins before her feet became so painful. Sometimes she will just sit there and her feet would start aching and sometimes this would last all day and night. At the time, my wifes hands would only hurt when she moved them, but the last two weeks, her hands have been so bad, even when she does not move them. She can't sleep at night because of the pain and the pain is there 24/7.

We went to our midwife and she said its most prob fluid, and she booked us to see a Physiotherapist. We went to see the physiotherapist and She asked loads of questions about the symptoms and check her hands and feet. She said it was worrying that my wifes feet and hands were really hot, and the fact that she couldn't straighten her hands or make a fist. She said my wife might have severe carpal tunnel syndrone, and said its quite rare for a woman who is only 18 weeks gone to have these symptons.

We told her that our doctor was going to make an appiontment to see rheumatologist. She went to check to see if they got my wifes information, and it turns out that our doctor did not even bother to tell them!!! So the woman said she will sort it out. She gave us some splinters for the hands but they did not work. She said that when we go home, i should get a bowl of hot water, and a bowl of cold water, and my wife should dip her hands in the cold for a while, and then the hot. We done this, and the symptoms did go for about 30 mins, but then they just come back stronger

we went to the hospital. We saw a doctor and she seemed to think that it was carpal tunnel syndrome. She took us to the anti natal department in the hospital. Another doctor came along and done some simple tests with my wifes hands and said he did not think it was carpal tunnel. He told her that she will have to stay there overnight and take a blood test. Also, he said he would get the Orthopedist doctor to check her out.

That night after i left, she was really bad. They gave her some sort of drink and she fell asleep for an hour, but woke up again in pain. In the end, they gave her an injection of Morphine that knocked her out all night.

The next day five Orthopedist doctors came over and done some simple tests. He said he did not believe it was carpal tunnel syndrome. The blood tests came back and they were fine, with no sign of arthritis. He said it was a complete mystery. He said he would get the Rheumatologist to come and see her.

He came and done some tests. He said he believed it was Rheumatoid Arthritis and they would need to do another blood test.

She was in so much pain they injected her with some sort of steroid and gave her 30mg codeine.

They said it will take a few days for the steroid to start working, so she should take the codeine, two every six hours. We have an appointment to see the Rheumatologist on the 5th may.

To be honest, the 15mg codeine did not work, and the 30mg is not working too and the steroid did not work either

I was very skeptical about the steroid because everything they have given my wife has not worked (apart from the morphine) but she can't take that everyday.

My wife was bad again, so i took her up the hospital. The midwife there said there is nothing they can do about it, and we really should not be in the marternity ward because its not pregnancy related, which is a load of rubbish. Anyways, another doctor came and could see she was in alot of pain, so he said she should stay the night.

She was in alot of pain that night and they gave her the drink again and the morphine, but they did not work as well as the first time she took them and the pain was there all night.

In the morning, a doctor came to see us and she said the blood tests came back fine, and she believed that the problem was fluid in the hands and sensitive nerves. She said there is not much they can do, and she will have to wait to see the Rheumatologist. Also, one of the drugs the midwife gave my wife was IBprofen. I asked if it was safe, and she said it was , but not after 24 weeks. Anyways, after two days of taking it, the doctor said we should not be taking it and stopped it straight away.

The sad thing about this, is they don't even know 100% what is causing this. I have had to stop work because my wife can't do anthing with her hands. She can't eat, wash, brush her teeth etc. She cries everyday because of the pain, and night time is the worst time. She said she has never felt pain like this before.

What i do to ease the pain in wrap a frozen bottle in a thin towel and she holds it at night so it numbs the hand and she can sleep. It the day time she has her hands in a bowl of cold water. But as soon at she takes her hands aways, they get so hot and the pain comes back again.

I rang the Rheumatologist today and managed to get an earlier appointment. We need to see him tomorrow, the same day we have our 20 week scan.

I am so stressed over this, and what makes it worse is, i have not come across one woman who went through, or is going through the same thing as my wife.

My wife is in a really bad way, and she is worried that there is nothing they can do about it, but she says she can't take the pain much longer. She said the pain feels like the time she trapped her finger in the car door, but this time its all over her hands and wrist 24/7. Also her hands are so hot and she has a burning pain feeling too. When i use the frozen bottle, the heat of her hands melts the ice quite quickly, thats how bad it is.

I hope we can get some answers tomorrow because there is only so much my wife can take. Im hoping someone here has gone through the same thing.

Any luck with the acupuncture? Hope so...

morrison1976 · 13/05/2011 22:39

Yes, my wife had her first session today. Like i said before, my wifes hands have improved a bit. ow its only her two small fingers an half the palm on each hand that is hurting. The pain is still there, but my wife says the pain is now bearable.

The thing is, my wife had a bit of an accident on the bus home after the session. We got onto the bus and there were no seats downstairs, so we had to go upstairs. My wife was half way up and the bus startedmoving, and she had to grip the sides of the bus. The made her scream in pain, and her hands started to hurt badly again.

It has only started to calm down again back to what it was before the accident on the bus. So, its hard to tell if the acupuncture has done anything
:(

She did notice that some of the areas were the pins went in (her hand) she was still feeling the same sensation (bit painful) hours later. We are new to this, so we really don't know what to expect.

We hv another session next friday. This incident just showed me that we have to be careful. My wifes condition might be a bit better, but if she strains her hands, then sh could spend hours in pain like today.

If its not one thing, its another thing! :( But i am still positive that she will get better.

We have a hand ultrasound on monday, and on the same day, we also have an appointment for vascular assessment.

Are you still considering going to China?

morrison1976 · 18/05/2011 11:17

Its not worth going to China now. My wife had ultrasound on her hands and vascular assessmnt on monday. They found no problems for the cause of the pain. She is a bit better. The meds have begun to kick in. She only has pain on half of her hands. The two small fingers and tha half of the hand, but its bearable pain.

I just hope the medication is safe for the baby, as this is really worrying for us both.

Our daughter kicks like made everyday, which is a good sign :)

Well, its been a few weeks since i posted on this thread. Im glad to say that things are looking up. Her hands are alot better. Now, she only has pain in her little fingers on both hands. Im thinking its the medication. She can do alot more stuff now, including sleeping through the night :) I think in the next two weeks or so, the pain will have completly gone in her hands.

She has cut down to only three tramadol a day, and she takes them with the gabapentin. Maybe if things keep getting better, we can cut down the meds to two a day, and see what happens.

As for her feet, they are pretty much the same. She can only walk for ten mins, then she gets the pain, which means we can't walk. But she can live with that at the moment. The worst was alwasy her hands.

I have a question for you guys. The last week or so, she has had a craving for "wild west beef nuggets" Its dried beef in a pack. I was wondering if this is safe for pregnancy?

Mmmmcheese · 31/05/2011 16:20

I'm so glad that your wife is feeling better and that you are more positive that this will go when she has the baby. Stay hopeful!

I'm not sure about the dried beef - if it's cured meat rather than cooked then i don't think it will be safe. You can only eat cured meat like salami etc. if you cook it thoroughly first.

Rootatoot · 31/05/2011 17:13

Great to hear you sounding positive Morrison :) No idea about the beef as I'm veggie, but nice to hear you both 'enjoying' some lesser complicated pregnancy symptoms like cravings!!!

morrison1976 · 31/05/2011 19:10

Thanks everyone. Yeah the last 7 weeks have been very hard for us both. I hope the worst is behind us now.

As for the beef nuggets. On the pack it says they are naturally smoked. I dont know if this means anything. Im trying to get information online about the product, but nothing at the moment :(

Rootatoot · 31/05/2011 21:21

Is it like beef jerky? Try googling beef jerky in pregnancy or else find somewhere that makes it and give them a call? We've bought bison jerky from farm shop before but they don't have any just now (tried getting some a short while ago for DH). OR just cook her a nice steak and see if that satisfies? :)

morrison1976 · 01/06/2011 11:21

Yeah, its like beef jerky. I emailed the company and they said and i quote

"Our beef nuggets are a fully cooked product so I see no reason as to why these wouldn?t be safe to eat. However please check this with your mid wife ? taking a packet to discuss with the contents."

S, i think i will do that because i don't want to risk it

OP posts:
Rootatoot · 01/06/2011 11:31

Yeah probably best check it out. She'll probably be craving something else by the time you find out mind you! ;) I just want CAKE ! All the best to you both. :)

morrison1976 · 28/06/2011 19:11

Hi everyone.

Sorry its been a long time, but i thought i would get everyone up to date. My wifes problem seems to have gone. She has no pains in her hands, or feet now.

We don't know if this is because of the medication, or if it went naturally. She has come off the Tramadol, and from today, she is only taking two Gabapentin now, and next week, she will just take one, then none at all. If the pain comes back, then we will know that its the Gabapentin that has stopped the pain. Im hoping this is not the case because we are both worried about the effects of Gabapentin.

She has a EMG test tomorrow. I don't know much about it. All i know is they stick niddles into the areas that have the pain. I don't know if this test is 100% safe for pregnant women.

I am confident now that this was just a pregnancy related condition. We even had some 3d scans done :) We have a baby scan every four weeks, and the baby is doing really well :)

The last few months have been hard. At one point, i thought my wife would be stuck with this condition through the whole pregnancy and beyond. I just hope that someone who has the same condition as my wife will find this thread :)

Rootatoot · 28/06/2011 19:58

That is such great news, morrisson, such a relief for you both. Very happy to hear your baby is doing well too. :) What did they conclude the condition is in the end? oh, and when is baby due? Possibly not too long to go now?

Best wishes :)

morrison1976 · 28/06/2011 20:12

They still don't know 100% what caused it, and they have not come across another woman with the same symptoms, but im sure my wife can't be the only one.

They diagnosed my wife with Erythromelalgia. But even after that, they still were not sure. The last test we have is tomorrow (EMG test)

She is 29 weeks now. We are able to enjoy the pregnancy now. The only conditions she has now are the normal conditions. The last week, she has been suffering from restless legs sydrome, and its been driving her mad. I have to massage her legs and arms before she goes to sleep. I have that condition, so i know its annoying. She has a bit of heart burn, and being sick every so often, but thats it.

Rootatoot · 28/06/2011 20:20

Fantastic. :) I'm just ahead of your wife at 32 weeks. Glad her symptoms are just the irritating pregnancy ones now( sympathise with heartburn!). Sounds like it's been very hard for them to pin down the condition then but thank goodness they and you have made such great progress.

I'll look forward to hearing that your LO has arrived safely in September. Just so good that you've made it through this awful time. Wishing you much happiness to come.

morrison1976 · 28/06/2011 20:26

Thank you!! :)

This board has helped me alot over the last few months, and i am grateful to everyone who gave me advice :)

Fantastic news morrison. I am so pleased that your DW and the baby are doing well.
I have scans every 4 weeks and they are just amazing. I am so happy that I can take a peek at baby very frequently.

Hope that coming off all the meds won't cause the symptoms to come back.

Enjoy the pregnancy, now that it has returned to "normal" :)

redundant · 29/06/2011 08:03

So pleased for you and your wife, that's brilliant news and glad you can look forward to little one arriving now.

RichAllen, sorry to hear you aren't well. Unfortunately, this thread is 3 years old so I think it's unlikely you'll get a response from the OP.
