What are you meant to be feeling at 20 weeks?

Hello, I am 20+2 with my first child, and I have not felt much in terms of movement at all. Maybe an occasional twitch, but this is all very faint, and I do not even know if it is the baby moving. So potentially I have not felt anything at all. I've read on here that most people already feel proper kicking by now. My scan is next week. Should I really be feeling a lot by now?

Depends on the baby, on you, on the position of the placenta etc.

With dd I couldn't feel a lot at 20wks. The odd nudge and wriggle.

Am 19 weeks with number 2 and my body contorts out of shape with the baby's punching and kicking.

Different pregnancies entirely.

With your first it's normal not to feel much, if anything, at 20wks.

I am at 18weeks and nary so much as a feather touch that I have been aware of, looking forward to it when it starts though, I am sure you will feel something soon.x

I think it is more difficult with a first baby because you don't know what to expect, so you only really 'feel' the baby kicking when it is obvious (sometimes can even see your tummy moving). I felt the same and only after the scan (which was difficult as dd kept moving) realised that dd had been kicking for a long time but had not recognised it as such.

hi im pregnant with my 2nd and i started feeling movements 1st time around 22-23 wks it first feels like a rumbling tummy (not a kick at all) or if if you were bloated, then later on it becomes more like a wave going through ur belly and twisting it. 2nd time around i started feeling movements around 19 wks as they say you know what to look out for.
Brilliant time is ahead of you
Enjoy!!!

Mine felt like butterflies in my tummy at 20 weeks.

RitaMorgan · 24/04/2011 11:38

I didn't feel anything until after the 20 week scan, around 21 weeks I think.

Like Annamaria, at first it feels more like wind!

I'm 24 weeks with my third and can only just about feel the odd slight movement. Theres no way you'd feel it from the outside yet.
I have an anterior placenta though so it muffles the movements (should show on your notes from the scan if you have this too)

I'm 25 weeks pregnant with my first, have only felt movements for about the last week and a half, and they're still quite faint. I've got a posterior placenta and was getting a bit worried at about 22/23 weeks, but now I know I am definitely feeling the baby.

I did phone my midwife just over a week ago, as I was concerned I should be feeling more. She reassured me, I would recommend doing the same if it is on your mind.

I'm sure both of us will soon be complaining that the baby is kicking too much!

ElsieR · 24/04/2011 12:38

Didn't feel at a fat lot at 20 weeks. Didn't feel proper kicking till much later.

MustMountMoreFairies · 24/04/2011 13:14

Thanks a lot ladies, that is very comforting. I am going for a scan soon, but it's good to hear that not everyone felt movement before 20 weeks. Is it all just going to be worry from now on?

i wasnt sure I was feeling anything and then a few days before my 20wk scan i knew it was a def baby movement! now I realise I had felt things before but when its yr first you can attribute it to everything else. i swore it was trapped wind rumbling, just caught round the front lol

nannyl · 24/04/2011 22:13

Im 20 weeks today with my 1st

have been feeling baby very occasionaly for the past 4 weeks. Only when lieing in bed and concentrating, and many many times ive been laying there, concentrating and not felt anything at all.

have only felt baby when doing 'other stuff' since friday (19+5) and today baby has moved loads and loads and loads!

Hey just to let you know i worried bout this too and i did not feel anything until almost 21 weeks. Did not feel any of the flutterings that people talk about just one big kick then felt it quite consistently from then on. My placenta was lying low and posterior i think so not sure if that had an effect. Try not to stress i think its because people keep asking you at this point if you have felt anything! also lying totally flat is when i felt it best.
