Brown spotting

Hi,

I am 6 weeks pregnant and have had light brown spotting for the last 3 days. It seems to be there when I wipe and sorry if too much info but after a poo there is a bit more. It can then stop for most of day and then start again.

I have no pain and had a missed miscarriage last year so I am terrified the same is happening again.

Should I just wait it out? How common is brown spotting?

My boobs still feel like I'm pregnant but had no stretchy pains for last few days.

Xx xx

Very common, try not to panic! If it becomes bright red and you are in pain then call your early pregnancy unit though.

Hi , I had this last week at 6 weeks . I called our EPAU and they scanned me and we saw a heart beat . It has stopped since then , but was exactly as you describe , but also with cramping and back ache . I thought that was it . The midwife said it could be implantation bleeding , but to put my feet up for a few days , because I had had a MMC at about 9 weeks two months previously .

I am nervous , because I had been having really bad sickness , everytime I ate or drank , but now its just nausea, so I also have a private scan booked for next Saturday to put my mind ay rest.

Can you call your EPAU and tell them if your history ?

lolajane2009 · 22/04/2011 09:03

I had it at 7 and 9 weeks and I am now 19 weeks preg. unless it is heavy, has clots or is red i wouldnt worry too much.

i remember getting it the first time and crying till I fell asleep... bloody hormones were insane.

I had brown and pink spotting on and off from 8-14 weeks, had also had a mmc previously and was terrified. You should be able to get a referral to your EPAC (ask your GP or phone them directly and self refer) who should give you an early scan (although they may want to wait until 7 weeks to be sure of detecting a heartbeat). My EPAC saw me twice and also reassured me over the phone a couple of times during the period I was spotting and were really lovely. I remember that the worry and waiting and being terrified is horrible. Hope everything is okay for you.

Thanks so much, I guess I must try and relax if it's just a common thing. Xx

Do try and relax but please also phone your EPAC, if you can get a scan to stop your worrying it'll be worth it.

Also could be erosion of the cervix which is useful to be diagnosed but of NO CONCERN. It is a hormonal thing which affects the surface of the cervix only. I has brown and red spotting/bleeding -especially after a poo!
Do get it checked out but hopefully nothing to worry about. [To check for erosion of cervix its a torch shone up...well you know!]. I was checked at EPU after 3rd episode of bleeding. It would have been nice to know after 1st so maybe push a bit for check up. Take care. x

Implantation bleeding - egg implanting into your womb lining. I didn't have it with dd1 but did with my second pg - twice - turned out it's twins. But it's really common. Only need to worry if it's bright red bleeding x

georgiepie · 22/04/2011 19:16

I will do. I am going to organise a scan for next week and will ask about the cervix erosion too. Thanks again xxx

Hi there - totally agree with others, most prob all Ok but is a real worry. I called EPAU and the wanted to see me and scan me, infact was scanned quite a lot with that and then when I saw fresh red blood which was so scary but it was all OK. Now 29 weeks preg. Call the EPAU, if its anything like ours they check absolutely loads of people and it is fine. They think mine was caused by an ectropian - cervical erosion - which apparently is really really common and not a problem but can cause it. Even now when they do an internal they comement that they can see it. I know it's so worrying at the time though... even more reason to get it checked out so you can be more reasurred!!!!! Good luck x

hester · 22/04/2011 19:58

I had brown and red spotting from 10 weeks to 20 weeks. Did my head in, especially as I'd had a previous miscarriage. But all was fine.

Really hope it settles down and you get some peace of mind soon.

Kazzy678 · 22/04/2011 22:22

I had this and thought it was game over for me as I had it when I have a missed miscarriage. So I went to my epau and they ran lots of tests and gave me a scan and all was ok luckily. However the consultant saw the discharge and was a bit puzzled by it so ran lots of extra tests to be on the safe side.

I felt happier knowing that absolutly everything was ok.

Fingers crossed all is ok for you x

georgiepie · 23/04/2011 11:28

Girls as I am just 6 weeks did you manage to get your scan then or did they make you wait until almost 7 so they can see a heartbeat.

Hi folks going through identical issues at 7 weeks went to A&E yesterday but they can't scan me till Tuesday due to the hols. I had one splash of red this morning but the rest is brown and low flow. I have naturally assumed the worse but your posts give me a faint hope things might still be ok.

highheelsandequations · 23/04/2011 13:50

georgie I had a scan at 6 weeks at the assisted conception unit (had thought I was later than actually was due to messed up cycles) but they would not say for certain they could see a heartbeat so had to go back a week later for a repeat scan. Some places they will scan before 7 weeks and sometimes a heartbeat can be detected at 6 weeks, some places don't as they don't want to cause more worry if they can't see much. If you're having a scan before 8 weeks it should be an internal one as they can see more, don't panic though, they're fine.

georgiepie · 10/05/2011 08:45

Girls, I did have a scan at EPU last week (week 7) and all was well. The spotting even stopped for a few days.

However it started again on Saturday and spotting was bit pink, then turned to brown and now only seems to be when i have a poo.

Does anyone have any idea what else it could be? I have another scan next week but it is really making me sick with worry as i keep thinking it is another MMC.

Sorry to be selfish but i guess I am desperate for more reassurance.

Yep, don't worry!

I saw my doctor yesterday as I had concerns (not bleeding though) and he did say that some bleeding (spotting) is perfectly normal and 'expected' as it is the embryo implanting and the placenta beginning to take form.

I thought the placenta was present when pregnancy is confirmed (i.e. just after missed period) but I was informed that it doesn't develop until around 6th week. I'm 5 weeks and 4 days so I'm putting my cramps down to that. I thought I had a slight blood stain when I went to the loo but it turns out pink knickers in the light of our downstairs loo can deceive!!!!
