Hi,

I am only 6 weeks pregnant and have just been to see my GP. I am classed as high risk as I have had 3 miscarriages and I am 42.

She has prescribed 75mg dose of aspirin daily to help with the pregnancy and lower the chance of another miscarriage. However when I got home my books and Internet say DON'T take asprin which can cause miscarriage?

Please does anyone know or heard of this?

I'm so worried. She has also taken my blood to test my thyroid, hcg levels and I have to go again on Tuesday to the hospital for more blood tests.

Any advice or experiences would really help please

Thanks xx

regular dose aspirin is not advised but low-dose "baby" aspirin (typically 75mg or 81mg) is fine.

I've also been advised to take it after previous miscarriages, though I wasn't specifically found to have any clotting disorders. I took it all through my pregnancy with my son, up until around 35 weeks.

Do you trust a Dr or the internet?

A quick google suggests reasons it could have been prescribed, but was it not explained how the aspirin would help at the apt?

also - you might also want to ask your doctor about progesterone suppositories - there is some controversy over whether low progesterone can be a symptom or a cause of miscarriage, but I was prescribed it in my third and only successful pregnancy as a "can't harm but could help" measure. (however I had a fourth pregnancy end in miscarriage despite progesterone and aspirin, so who knows.)

oh, and congratulations!!!

Congratulations!! Low dose aspirin taken under medical advice is fine to take in pregnancy. I was on alternate doses of 75mg and 150mg for my last pregnancy and DS is fine.

Hi,

thanks that has offered me some reassurance. I dont think I was listening very well when she prescribed them, I just heard - they should help!

Its good to hear you had healthy pregnancies too. I did also ask about progesterone but she said there is no evidence to support them that they work. Maybe I will see what my hcg levels do in next week and raise it again.

I had a previous mc and the Dr prescribed me aspirin when I got pregnant too - I now have a healthy 4 yr old DD. Good luck!

Hey,

I am on 75mg daily to help the placenta function. I would strongly recommend you take your doctor's advice over the internet, my Consultant told me they prescribe it because it helps the placenta to form & function properly. It also works as an anti-coagulent if you are at risk of clots!

Congratulations & good luck! :)

Same as people above - I was prescribed 75mg of aspirin + progesterone which I was advised to take for the first 12-14 weeks.
Aspirin, form what I read and was told by GP, could POTENTIALLY be a problem if taken at higher doses towards the end of the pregnancy but I am assuming you are under your dr's supervision so he will advise you about when best to stop taking it etc.
CONGRATULATIONS and good luck :)
