healthy eating in pregnancy: seeds

Can anyone tell me if pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are healthy and, if so, what vitimins/minerals do they give you? I have a feeling I read somewhere that they were good for you so am sprinkling them on my cereal. However, they don't taste that nice so if they are not good for me, I'd like to stop! (reason I'm trying hard with seeds etc is that mornings are the times when I feel least sick so can eat a good breakfast whereas as the day goes on, can't face much).

More generally, anyone know a good website listing good foods to eat in pregnancy and what they give you in terms of vitamins/minerals etc etc

Thanks

you could lightly fry/tast the seeds sprinkled with some soy sauce...

they contain magnesium and selenium I think -

tast=toast

They are very good for you, have lots of Omega oils which are important for the development of your baby's brain. If you don't like the taste so much, you could try grinding them up and sprinkling them on your cereal that way. Mixed in with the milk you might not mind them so much.

Agree dry-fried with some soy sauce till they are just getting crunchy is delicious - but I like them plain, so may be biased.

Yum, that sounds nice but at this stage I'm really craving strong, salty tastes so maybe I should just have the soya sauce by itself! Anyway, glad to hear its helping the baby.

Thanks

A bump to see if anyone knows about the second question - ie are there any good websites out there showing what foods give you what minerals/vitamins etc. Thanks

well I just ended up eating what I fancied - I did buy packets of roasted pumpkin seeds from Sainsburys health section - they have soy sauce on them and are delicious. Congratulations.

broccoli
fruit + veg of all sorts
lentils

however.... I ate loads of biscuits and pancakes when I was preg!

lakeland sell tubs of seeds that are very very moreish - can't remember what they're called, but they're yum

geranium · 03/11/2005 18:27

ooh, pancakes....no, I'll stick to trying Enid's suggestion. I hope my Sainsburys has the soya pumpkin seeds. Thanks for suggestions.

God yes I hate raw sunflower and pumpkin seeds, always either toast them or put them in an un oiled pan till they go brown and pop. That way you can easily add soy sauce, salt, honey, whatever. They are really good in coleslaw but lose their crunch quite quickly. Quite often I have a wee bowl of them on the table for sprinkling on food (eg baked potatoes) because the texture of them when freshly cooked is excellent.
