What to wear for a scan?

OK, I know this is a stupid question and if I'd been able to sleep for more than an hour at a time for the last few nights I wouldn't be asking, but: what's the best thing to wear for a scan? I'm usually a dress and tights person - will that be OK? Do they just get you to get your tights off? (Just so I know whether I'll have to shave my legs... Blush )

You just need to lift up your top half, but be prepared to lift your bottom half down to the top of your bikini line! Unless you are being scanned earlier than 12 weeks in which case they might do an internal scan which would obviously involve taking off bottom half Smile

Um all you need is your belly free so you'll just lift up your dress over the bump. I've found if you wear jeans the goo tends to get everywhere but honestly it doesn't matter what you wear. You won't have to take the tights off just maybe pull them down a bit so they can reach your pubic bone

Melly19MummyToBe · 13/04/2011 22:26

Just make sure your belly and bikini line are easily accessible :)

If you are having an internal scan, you usually go into a toilet/cubicle where you remove all bottom half clothing and put a hospital gown on top of your other clothes.

If its an abdominal scan, they will ask you to pull your clothes down to about where your public hair grows and tuck a large paper towel into your knickers/clothes so as not to get gel everywhere. I would be more comfortable in skirt/trousers rather than hiking a dress up to my chest and feeling all exposed.

I certainly hope it's not public hair :o

MummyAbroad · 13/04/2011 22:53

Grin oops sorry, that should be "pubic"

SoupDragon · 13/04/2011 22:55

Black satin crotchless knickers and a pair of nipple tassles. Trust me, it is the only appropriate scan wear.

Melly19MummyToBe · 13/04/2011 23:04

I imagine that sort of outfit is very easily accessible Soup, whatever scan may be needed.

:o

not a dress

def go for trousers :) it's easier to pull them down a bit and they give you enough tissue to tuck in so you don't get messy.
I wore a long shirt on top - I alway do just in case they ever ask you to remove bottoms ;) they did at my 12 wk scan to check blood flow and had to do a vaginal for that ;)

PS My husband was sitting there and he gulped when he saw the dr put a condom on the ultrasound wand - he wanted to leave at that point but I growled at him quietly to sit down ;)))))))))

I've often been asked to remove my bottoms even at later scans as I sometimes need unexpected internals (checking cervical length, placenta position, blood flow etc - all sorts of reasons).

As a result I tend to wear a skirt (no tights) and then it is really easy. Just whip yer knickers off - takes seconds. All the places I have been to, you do this behind a curtain in the scan room and then climb onto the scan table and put a towel over yourself before calling the sonographer back through. With a skirt you have that extra layer of dignity.

An elasticated waist skirt is the very best because it's easier to pull down for abdominal scans - a particularly tight, fixed waist skirt could be more fiddly. I don't care if the sonographer sees I haven't shaved my legs in the last few days, but I care if the public does so I tend to make it a long skirt, a thick one if it's cold out because of the no tights.

The trouble with trousers is that you have nothing covering you at all then if the towel slips, plus you have the faff of taking your shoes off/putting them back on which can be pretty awful in late pregnancy! This also applies to tights, sadly.

Never, ever, wear a dress!! Fine for internals, admittedly, but just awkward and undignified for abdominals!

LDNmummy · 14/04/2011 02:07

I'm a dress and tights person (wear this combo pretty much everyday) and thats what I wore to my scan. I pulled my dress up to under bust area and tights down to bikini line. Was way easier than wearing trousers or thick leggings. Congrats and good luck with your scan!

iskra · 14/04/2011 12:17

Don't bother shaving your legs. My hospital does abdo & internal scans, so I had to take my lower half off (can't remember what I was wearing!) but my legs were covered by a sheet anyway. I'd bloody got up earlier before DD in order to shave them specially!

BikeRunSki · 14/04/2011 12:27

I wore a skirt, top and tights to 12 week scan on Tuesday. I took off tights and lifted up skirt. Sonographer tucked a big sheet of that blue paper towel into the top of my knickers and away we went. No fancy lingerie, not high maintenance toilette...

BabCNesbitt · 14/04/2011 12:47

Cheers for the replies! I could probably have figured that out if I had half a brain left, but... Blush

SoupDragon: that goes without saying, surely?
