Bleeding during sex

dh and I had sex when I was 5 weeks pg and I bled. Since we've discovered pg is fine and it's twins. I've had bad sickness and exhaustion (working, 3-year-old and twin pg!) so not been up for sex since. I banned it until 12 week scan anyway but tried today at 16 weeks and after touching me dh said there was some pink blood so we stopped. Do we really have to go for the next 5 months with no sex? (I doubt there will be much going on once twins are born and I've had a c-section). Will I be making dh and I celebate for the next year?!

It's really common to have bleeding during/after sex in pregnancy. The cervix is quite engorged and sensitive and sometimes it gets bumped an bleeds a little. The bleeding is normally pinkish or a rusty brown colour, it should stop shortly afterwards and shouldn't be heavy enough to need a pad - one of the standard questions they ask at the pregnancy assessment unit when women report bleeding is "have you had sex in the last 24 hours?"

If you're not comfortable having penetrative sex then there are other things you could do instead rather than being celibate.

I had this twice before about 17 weeks and it put us off penetrative sex for a while! There was no harm done but it's not very sexy to be worrying about bleeding. Anyway, we did other stuff instead which we both like anyway. Now 30 weeks and just ventured back into it (more gently than normal and shallow-ish position - sorry if TMI) and no bleeding! Don't know if that helps at all but thought I'd share. There are many steps between penetration and celibacy...

Hi PrincessScrumpy, my first pg was twins, had slight bleeding up untill 32 wks on and off. I was told it is nothing to be worried about, as the amount wasn't much ( just like spotting, but was bright red) I had elective CS (upon our request) at 37 wks. there was no problems having very gentle penetrative sex at all... and also Princess it really worths getting your cervix checked after you give birth, cos it can happen due to cervical polyps. I had mine checked ( I had same problem again at 6.5 wks this time round, I am 22+ wks now, I have few cervical polyps, my doctor said, will do something about it after the delivery)
So why celebacy ?

Thank you. I was far more relaxed with dd1's pg. This time it's like there's even more to lose with two and I nearly lost dd1 at 32 weeks so I'm far more apprehensive this time now the rose tinted glasses have come off.
