Will my baby arrive early if my mum's babies did?

My midwife asked me if my mum gave birth to me and my sister on time. I replied that she did - we were both two weeks early.

She then said that I'd better prepare myself for the same because early delivery runs in families.

Is this true? Sounds like an old (mid)wive's tale to me!

Oh I didnt know this, my mum also gave birth early and was two weeks measuring in front same as me. So could have an early baby then Interesting!

Well I shall know for sure next month.

My mum had 2 babies, each 2 weeks early. I've had 2 babies, each within 2 days of my due date (one either side). So it doesn't always work :)

I don't know. My brother and I were born at 7 and 8 months, but all of mine were born past 40 weeks.

Right, so it looks like it's a load of bunkum (unless you're Tunnock!). Glad I've got such a well-informed midwife!

My mum had 3 between 34 and 37 weeks. DC1 was born at 41+3, and no signs of DC2 yet (nearly 38 weeks). My midwife told me the same, but it didn't work for me!

It did follow the pattern for me. My sister and my DD were both born on their due date. I was 6 days early and my DS was a few days early too (by my dates anyway!)
I also have a friend whose mum went over due with all 4 DC and her 2 were both late too....

Does not sound like it's a foregone thing though judging by the mix of answers...good luck !

Nope. I was born at 33 weeks (2lb 14oz) and wwas my Mum's first live delivery (she had 7 MC's before me). I had my DD at 40+1 and had a very normal pregnancy. Currently 23+5 with my 2nd and everything proceeding exactly the same.

My mum had 3 babies - one 1 week early, one on due date, & 2 weeks late.

I had DD 2 weeks late.

Leilababyno1 · 08/04/2011 15:08

Do you think that the length of your menstrual cycle may have anything to do with when you go into labour?? Standard is 28 days, but some people shorter, some longer.

My cycles tend to normally be around 30-32 days in length. So if that theory is anything to go by- my baby will be late.

BTW due in 3 weeks..

happytree · 08/04/2011 17:00

My mum had two babies at 30 and 32 weeks (I was on time) but my DS went to 42+2 so no!

moomaa · 08/04/2011 17:03

My mum had 4 late, I have had 3 late. I have a long cycle and I guess this might run in families. Mum had a late menopause too.

Bramshott · 08/04/2011 17:06

My mum had me at 36 wks, and I have had the DDs at 33 and 38 wks so it's fairly true here.
