Nuchal test / combined screening

Hi,
I have my 12 week scan on Wednesday so am the bundle of nerves you'd expect. This is DC3 so have been through it twice already, but our PCT has changed it's rules since my first 2 and we now get the combined screening test (i.e. the nuchal scan + blood test). In my previous pregnancies we knew on the day of the scan the revised odds of Downs etc as obviously they were basing it all on the nuchal scan - however, now that the bloods are being done too, they say we will not get any results on the day of the scan. My question is, for anyone in a similar position, did the sonogropher let you know the nuchal thickness or do they keep quiet incase people run off and google results without the proper information?
It seems a bit weird that we could on Wednesday know that everything is ok in one sense but that things would still be on hold IYKWIM?
Thanks so much x

I had the combined screening for my DC2 last year, but they told us the results the same day. Do they analyse the blood sample on site or is it sent somewhere else? If it's on site, it only takes an hour....

grubbalo · 04/04/2011 10:51

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not sure actually, I assumed was on site but I think they've said can take a week for full results (it might have been my midwife who told me). I was just re-reading my stuff and it made it very clear that results would not be available that day!
Thanks again.

I had my combined screening test on Weds last week. The sonographer said she couldn't tell me anything there and then so we prepared ourselves for a long agonising wait..The (good) results came by post on Friday which was a lot quicker than we expected! Hopefully you won't have too long to wait either. Good luck!

Bubandbump · 04/04/2011 11:01

In our area, they do both the nuchal and the bloods on the same day and you have to wait about a week to get your combined probability. If the nuchal is greater than 2.5 then they tell you straight away anything over 3 is an automatic referral for a cvs. We got told straight away and then had the bloods rushed through to get the combined probability within 2 days. If there is anything to worry about, they tend to let you know and speed up the processes.

Thanks, all of you. I just found the literature online and they say high risk results will be communicated in 3 days, low risk within 5. It will be hard not to ask the sonographer if they can tell us the nuchal thickness there and then though!

I had the combined test when pregnant with DD almost 3 years ago, and it took over a week for full result inc bloods, but the sonographer told us there and then that the measurement was fine, so I felt a little more reassured.

I also have my 12w scan/screening on Wednesday so am the same sort of bundle of nerves as you! Good luck, hope it all goes well.

AllThreeWays · 04/04/2011 11:13

I had my scan on Saturday and we saw her write the measurement on the screen, so of course, off to google we went.
The sonographer wouldn't tell us anything though and said the results would take 5 days

slowshow · 04/04/2011 11:26

My sonographer didn't let me know - I watched her take the measurements on the screen though, so I saw the numbers. Didn't get the results through for about ten days, but I was low risk - presumably you'd get contacted more quickly if there was anything to worry about?

grubbalo · 04/04/2011 11:30

Yes I will be telling DH to keep a good eye on the screen! And yes we are supposed to find out quicker if it is high risk. I'm guessing a large nuchal fold means they ask for bloods to be rushed through and we would find out pretty fast.

Good luck to you tiokiko too!

Our sonographer told us all the measurements as she was going through them (and we asked if they were OK and she said yes). They did the bloods just before the ultrasound and we had to wait for 45 minutes to get the combined results.

Where I work the NT thickness is written on your report...might be worth a look.

CheshireDing · 04/04/2011 19:04

We had our Nuchal Scan on Saturday and we sent the blood off about 3-4 weeks ago because it needed to be done within a certain timeline.
That meant they had the blood results when we went on Saturday, the lady did the scanning then we waited in reception and when she brought us back in she gave us the full results there and then.
The Sonographer did say sometimes the blood results are even more accurate done as soon as they say you can, rather than towards the end of that timeline.
Seems a bit mean to have the scan and then still have to wait.

AllThreeWays · 05/04/2011 01:58

That's odd Cheshire, I was told the blood had to be taken withing three days of the scan or they were of no use?

mummyofmoomoos · 05/04/2011 04:45

im so scared about this, my midwife told me that you have to wait ten days for confirmation by post, its been 9 years since i was last pregnant and it all seems so different- iv got my 12 week scan/ tests in about 8 hours and cant sleep for the what ifs- it seems so much more clinical and serious this time round, plus theres the fact that im very overweight and im stressing at the extra scans and appointments iv been told are neccecary- i dont understand it all.

CrazyAlien06 · 05/04/2011 07:53

Hi
I had the nuchal scan measurement on my scan report :-) so googled away after! Could also see the sonographer measuring it on the screen. Had bloods taken straight after and got combined results through the post in about 5-6 days with low risk.
Keep your eye out on the screen when the sonographer is measuring away :D good luck today

X

grubbalo · 06/04/2011 21:52

Thanks again everyone, scan went well today and we got told beforehand that the sonographer would be telling us the measurement and whether it looked ok - the end result was a 1.6mm nuchal fold measurement which is bigger than with my other 2 pregnancies but is pretty good.

Now just to wait and see what the bloods come back as but PHEW!

Hello

I had bloods taken 6 days before the scan. Once we turned up at the scan she had the blood results so could give us the full results at the scan which was really helpful
