As a mum of 3, I would know if I was 12-16 weeks pregnant wouldn't I ??

It is more or less impossible that I could be and I am 99.9% sure that my weight gain is because I am a greddy pig, but it does keep slightly niggling at me, to the point that I have ordered a test from ebay.

I'd know though wouldn't I, if I were that pregnant, surely.

I think I may just be going nuts.

Oh and before anyone asks, I don't always have a break from my pill, so wouldn't know that way.

If the test is negative and your symptoms don't resolve you should pop to see the doctor for an examination. A pregnancy test won't show a result once you have passed a certain point.

You might not know. You need to test.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 03/04/2011 20:31

I think the doc might think I am crazy though. I have no symptoms other than weight gain lol. My stomach looks like I am pregnant but thats it lol.

Also i am on the pill and we used a condom so the chances are virtually nil anyway, it just keeps niggling at me all the time.

So at what point does the test become negative even if you are pregnant (slightly fretting now)

TheOriginalNutcracker · 03/04/2011 20:36

Don't know pinky. I looked that up on the net but couldn't find an answer.

I am going to have a bath and poke and prod my stomach some more lol.

Around 14 weeks - once the placenta is formed, the body stops producing HcG which is what it tests for. The reason first tri feels so crap is because your body is producing all those hormones to stop the parasite* being rejected. Once the placenta is formed, the baby-and-placenta become a self-supporting organism and the hCg isn't needed.

*Sorry for term, I just mean that's what the body thinks it is at that stage, or would do if not for the magic hormones.

OP, I suspect you would indeed know. FWIW, I put on about 10lb in the last year and it's ALL belly weight - so much so that I have looked about 20 weeks pregnant since well before getting knocked up again. It's a relief to have an excuse to wear maternity clothes, frankly.

I'm currently expecting my fifth child (!) and just wanted to mention that I have randomly tested at various points through each pregnancy and always got a good strong positive. Even at 39 weeks !! Hcg may decline but it doesnt vanish completely. A test finally went negative about 2 weeks after delivery. Yes, I am a serial tester!! So I would definitely expect a sensitive test to be positive at 12 - 16 weeks pregnant.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 04/04/2011 08:55

Why on earth did you test at 39 weeks pregnant?

greenzebra · 04/04/2011 11:11

If its negative, I would still go and see the doctors as it might not be pregnancy but something else. Better to be safe than sorry.
And dont worry about feeling a twit, the doctor is there to see you about your health and weight gain is a health matter.

Purely for the fun of it to use up my huge stash of tests :-) Was interested to see the result. Pregnancy gets boring by number 5!!

wobblyweeble82 · 04/04/2011 12:41

OP - there' not a lot any of us can say here if you have niggling feeling. Get yourself to your GP and have a good old chat and let him have a good old prod of your tummy. Then of course vow not to have that slice of cake for pudding when he just tells you it's just a bit of weight gain Blush Always worth checking out sudden weight gain though IMO.

My secretary didn't find out she was pregnant with number 4 'til she was 27 weeks. We were all ASTOUNDED. You couldn't tell, she had no symptoms, and went for a scan expecting this tiny, little baby and came back with a photo of a giant head! So it obviuosly IS possible, but if you're on the pill AND using condoms, well that'd be quite some statistic if you turned out to be pregnant ... GOod luck anyhow!
