Sore swollen labia - third trimester WWYD?

And when I mean swollen, I mean so swollen that it's uncomfortable to close my legs, and they feel very very sore.

I've been on fairly hefty antibiotics for a week now (first IV, now last day of oral), so part of me wonders whether it's thrush, however, there's no discharge.

Any home remedies, or should I have it looked at? I kind of don't want to keep phoning in at the triage unit - they're lovely, no doubt about that, but it seems that I turn up every couple of days, and I don't want to bother them if it's just one of those things I could sort myself?

So does anyone have experience of this and how do I best treat it?

I end up using a cold pack every night to help the swelling and also when sat on the loo use a wet cold flannel and hold it on there as long as your arm doesn't ache lol.

This is the first time I've suffered and haven't had it looked at - too embarrassed!!

I have read about this several times on these threads and if you google 'swollen labia in pregnancy' you will see quite alot of discussions. It seems that most of the time it is due to increased blood flow and perfectly normal but there might be a weak connection to some drugs, particularly antibiotics, or the onset of a yeast infection.
I have it, also with SPD which occurs right down the front of my pelvis - a cold flannel gives some relief

I'll try that - I'm just at a paranoid stage where I don't know whether it's risky to have something looked at or not. I guess if the flannels won't help, I can always give them a call.

Thanks for your replies

Have you got anything else swollen? I had pre eclamsia with my first baby and I had swollen feet, hands, face and after I gave birth it was swollen down there aswel so thinking it may be worth mentioning?

Only my bits -blood pressure is normal too. I didn't have any of these problems first time round, it's a pain :(

I have this too - mw said its normal and possibly have a varicos vein down there (nice!) do remember it with my others too, its extremely uncomfortable though you have my sympathy.

I am very sore and definitely a bit swollen Down There. No weird discharge, no itching - just very very sore. Sex is off the agenda as last time we tried, I bled a bit afterwards and it was very uncomfortable. Yuck!

I had 2 x rounds of ABs for a UTI but that was weeks ago, and I've had this issue on and off for the past few months, so I don't feel it's connected.

It's rotten isn't it!

WidowWadman - I would suggest you see your GP to rule out vulval vaginosis caused by thrush. Thrush can be without discharge and can cause the pain and swelling you are experiencing. I have recently had similar symptoms to you and had been on antibiotics for a UTI. I saw my GP, who diagnosed thrush and prescribed Canesten pessary and cream, which I have been using for a couple of days and the pain and swelling have all but gone now.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thank you - I'm seeing a midwife on monday now, hopefully she can help

I have it too, it's especially bad after I've been walking a lot. I find devanting some frozen peas into a sandwich bag and placing them between my legs really helps Blush

Decanting!

SeaShellsHasSandInHerShoes · 02/04/2011 19:08

It will get better within days of giving birth-speaking from experience Blush

I was the same and can only decribe it as going from small and neat to a big angry mouth that stopped me sittting, closing my legs or sleeping!!

I got checked out and it turned out it was thrush and I didnt notice any discharge at all but MW said it was prob called from the anti-Bs I had 2 weeks ago.

The treatment worked quickly and started to feel better after 2 days so fingers crossed for you x
