My daughter who is now 30 weeks has been suffering from itching palms, she contacted her midwife who took blood to have tested, at her next appointment the midwife said that she had only tested for liver function and not bile acids , she then took another test and after a further 5 day wait ,thank god, the test came back normal, I hate to think about the fact that all this time there could have been a problem, she has low iron though.

In the North East, we say that itchy palms means you'll soon come into money!

Itchy nipples. That's what I have to contend with (TMI, I know...)

hi moregranny,
it's good that your daughter is being checked, she should keep an eye on it and let her midwife know if it gets worse as it could be obstetric Cholestasis. I'm 37weeks and have Cholestasis, I had it in my first pregnancy too. Mine started at 34weeks both times with itchy palms & feet, this time it has spread to my arms & legs and becomes unbearable at night. My bile acid is being checked every week (they can change really quickly, mine raised in a couple of days !) and I'm booked in to be delivered at 38 weeks (they induced my first baby at 38weeks too because of the cholestasis). They have prescribed piriton which has relieved the itching a bit. I also had low iron and didn't want to take iron tablets as they make me so constipated, I was recommended Spatone its 100% natural iron (28 x sachets from amazon about £7.99) just add it to orange juice. It's worked a treat, iron levels up and no constipation. Hope that helps a little - good luck

Sorry, Ginger, don't know what itchy nips means you're in line for!

Thank you Bobbins, I have got her some Spatone now as well.DrSeuss, she phoned me to say that she had itchy palms so had bought a scratch card and won £10, what she didn't know was that itchy palms in pregnancy should never be ignored as it can be the only sign of cholestasis which can be dangerous for the baby, hopefully now the midwife will keep a check on her.

Sorry, didn't mean to be flippant but the £10 will be handy any way! Glad she's OK.
