Birth weight is it genetic?

I'm 32+6 with a small bump so figuring baby may be small. The biological father of the baby (we used a sperm donor) has several other biological children all born betweek 6.5 and 8lbs do you think this will have an impact on my babies birth weight? I'm sure someone told me birth weight was determined by the father?

I think it is between both parents, I was 6lbs, DP was 9lbs. DS was 7lbs 2 and DD 8lbs 2. So both were inbetween mine and DP birth weight.

I'm pretty sure birth weight is determined by mothers genes and the size the child becomes later is determined by father. Otherwise mums everywhere would be giving birth to babies that are too big for safe delivery, surely.

Ah hadnt thought about it like that Betty. That makes a lot of sense! Guess I'll just have to weight and see.

meh, I really wouldn't count on it!
I think all sorts of things come into it.
DH & sibling were both about 7 lbs.
My mother's were 5.5-6.5 lbs, but she smoked and was quite petite.
I don't smoke, am much taller, & my 4 DC were from 6.5 to almost 9 lbs, born 39-41.5 weeks gestation.

ps: if you're worried about small bump, I measured 2-4 weeks small for dates with my 4th, from about 33 wks pg (I did not measure small in previous pregnancies). The baby turned out to be the biggest baby to pop out, 8lbs 11 oz.

Cattleprod · 30/03/2011 10:57

I was 9lb 10oz, DP was 8lb something.

DS was 10lb 4oz!

The midwife told me that the only time they get problems with babies being too big for delivery is with certain mixed race babies - eg huge Scandinavian fathers with petite Japanese mothers etc.

saoirse86 · 30/03/2011 11:10

I was 6lb 10oz 3 days late (but I'm a twin), DP and his siblings were 8-9lb, DD was 6lb 14oz on due date.

scaryfairy28 · 30/03/2011 11:13

Thanks, not too worried about being small I measure just below my dates, just seem to be carrying very well so far!! Just curious as to what size baby will come out, time off work is clearly not a good thing.

Me and my sister were over 9lb. DH was over 10 lb. All born 2 weeks late.

My boy and girl were both average weights of 7lb 7 1/2, and 7lb 13.
They were both about 2 days late.

Thank god !! Wouldnt fancy squeezing anything bigger out thankyou!!Grin

I went overdue with DD1 and the midwife started talking about induction, asked obstetrician to talk to me, all because DD1 was measuring small and they were worried.

As soon as I told the obstetrician that I was also a small baby, he backed off and they let me continue for another week or so. DD1 was born 5 days overdue and weighed within 2lbs of my birth weight (5lbs 13).

But I posted this on another birth wring thread and they said it wasn't genetic.

MrsBloomingTroll · 30/03/2011 18:17

Sorry, wring was supposed to be "weight".

lolajane2009 · 30/03/2011 18:42

I hope not both me and hubby were under 6lbs, although I was a month early and hubby was 8 weeeks early. We both had issues gaining weight too, according to the mothers.

ToriaPumpkinHead · 30/03/2011 19:06

I hope not, my husband was nearly 12lbs!
