Pregnant, showing, and actually LOSING weight - is this common?

I am 12 +2 (ish), and I have lost 4lb since I became pregnant. My DH reckons I'm just losing 'alcohol weight' and he's probably right...

I've been showing since 5wks, and can't fit into my jeans any more, so it's especially weird.

I know it's not a huge amount, and I'm not overly worried but I wondered if anyone else had the same thing?

I had really bad morning sickness for the first 3 months and actually lost a stone and a half. Doc put me on tablets following a check up to stop me losing any more weight. I'm 5'2" and fairly petitie anyway. Just ask your midwife next time you see her and she'll tell you what's what.

Your DH is prob right. I ate better when I was pregnant than I'd ever done :)

lolajane2009 · 28/03/2011 16:07

I am 5ft 2, 15wks + 3 and fairly slim (9st 7) and only gained 2lb in pregnant but despite a pitiful weight gain I am definately showing. I have been showing since about 9 weeks. i wouldnt worry to be honest.

Wombat33 · 28/03/2011 16:45

Hi Katie. I'm 16+2, showing, can't fit into any of my clothes and am currently 5lbs lighter than when I got pg. I've only been sick three times, so it can't be that. My consultant said it's nothing to worry about. Hope that helps!

AlmightyCitrus · 28/03/2011 17:05

27 weeks and lost LOADS! I can still wear my pre-pregnancy jeans and trousers, and they still have a bit of room left.
I agree with your DH. Less beer and better, healthier food.
I've not been sick once, so it's not that.
I lost 2 dress sizes with my first pregnancy. I think I need to lose about 5 this time though! Grin

KatieWatie · 28/03/2011 17:11

Yeah I should've added, I've not been sick once since being pregnant. Pre-pregnanacy I was sick nearly every morning from stress (or hangover lol), but now I'm a lot more chilled out!!

your body is burning a lot of calories building the baby and so is natural to lose weight

PipCarrier · 28/03/2011 19:22

I lost weight in both of my pregnancies in the first 16 weeks and I was never actually sick. I think as firsttimer says your body is using a lot of calories at this time. I really wouldn't worry.

shushpenfold · 28/03/2011 19:24

Yup - I did with all 3. It won't last so make the most of it!!! lol

Grumpla · 28/03/2011 19:27

Yep I lost weight too, also went a sort of pale grey colour.

Are you eating enough? I definitely didn't (I wasn't sick, just not very hungry) and my energy levels plummeted, all the fat on my face & arms vanished into the bump.

About 5 months in I instigated an 'elevenses and afternoon snack' policy and I was amazed at the difference it made.

Try and make sure you keep easy snacks to hand like nuts, dried fruit, cereal bars, massive slices of chocolate cake bananas etc as well as making sure you are getting enough protein, fat etc in your diet. Your body will literally starve you of the 'ingredients' it needs to grow a baby, you need to look out for yourself!

Staceroo · 28/03/2011 20:38

Hey, you definitely shouldn't worry! I had my first docs appointment last week, and one of the first things she said to me is that I should expect to loose weight first, even if not physically being sick. As Grumpla says, doc said that my body will give the baby everything he/she needs before me. Which made me feel quite good actually, thought it was a nice thing that I'm making a sacrifice for our mini B.

annapolly · 28/03/2011 20:40

My DD lost weight throughout her pregnancy, she eats well.

At the end she looked anorexic. Baby is chubby little thing.

colditz · 28/03/2011 20:42

You need to look after yourself because your body will not look after you. Your body will look after your baby - you have to look after you.

otchayaniye · 28/03/2011 20:53

Me too. I lost a stone in the first 8 weeks (puking lots) and have stayed at that level (8.5 stone) and I'm now 19/20 weeks. I have put on maybe 2 or three pounds, it's hard to tell. I'm still sick, but only once a day and not the full contents (sorry)

Although I still feel sick sometimes and AM sick, I generally feel well, have energy and eat good food, I just have a lowered appetite and can't eat much at a sitting.

I'm not worried (neither are docs/midwives) as I'm eating good stuff, taking vits and feel ok. If I felt like shit, continued to lose and lose and was eating crap food, then I'd worry.

With my first though I put on 4 stone even though I was sick once or twice a day until I had her at 36 weeks.

fartblossom · 28/03/2011 21:03

With DS (now 6) I stayed the same weight throughout my pregnancy, so lost weight by having him IYSWIM. I lost a dress size, soon put it back on though.

With DD (now 3) I only put on her. I was the same weight AFTER I gave birth as I was before I got PG.

This time (currently 15+2) I have lost 5lbs so far.

Dont worry about it.

FeralGirlCambs · 29/03/2011 09:16

Hi Katie - I'm with your DH on alcohol weight; I'm sure that's what it was for me anyway! Grin I lost about a kilo after finding out I was pregnant and it stayed off till about 17 weeks. I'm now 22 and I've put on 2 kilos so am now 1kg heavier than when I started out. Still exercising, but eating lots more than before I was pg (think all this about not needing more calories must be b**cks, for me anyway) Went for a scan yesterday and all the other ladies in the waiting room had full-on bumps. I assume as there are no routine scans after 20-22 weeks they were all at the same stage as me. I really wouldn't worry - m/w told me it was perfectly fine not to put on much weight, despite those charts out there saying one 'ought' to put on 6kg by 20 weeks or whatever it is. I assume like many govt guidelines those are there because it's assumed we are too stupid to process factual information, and that if not told it's ok indeed required to put on weight silly little women will diet themselves into oblivion throughout pregnancy.... No doubt we'll fatten up in the end and wish we'd never worried!

wishwales · 29/03/2011 11:58

Hello. I was 103 kgs at booking in. At 19 weeks, I was 97 kgs and now at 21+4, I am 98kgs. I would say my bump became quite prominent within the last few days.

wishwales · 29/03/2011 11:59

Forgot to say I am under consultant care and they have no problem with weight loss. Of course, I started out very overweight so had/have plenty I could lose anyway.

hollyoaks · 29/03/2011 12:07

Pg and bfing have done wonders for my figure, I'm at my slimmest after giving birth (once my belly went down). I was in my skinny jeans within a week of giving birth and had legs like twigs! 10 months down the line however is another story and it's starting to creep back on though it's like the weight that my body naturally hovers at has lowered after each pg too.

0dc - 10st 7lb
1dc - 9st 7lb
2dc - 9st (don't know if this ones pg related or a highly mobile 10mo with an eye for trouble :))
