Anyone know the figures for the heart rate old wives tale?

If that makes sense!! Had a listen to the heartbeat today and the doc had a student in with him so they were counting the beats and I think he said 136/7/8. Anyone know if that's fast or slow and if that's girl/boy? I know it's all a load of crap but fun!!

My dd's hb was always around 150-160 when in utero and now im 36 weeks pregnant with a boy (know for definate as had amnio)who's hb has always been about 130-45 the slower it is apparently its meant to be a boy so if it's true looks like its a boy!

hunkerpumpkin · 27/10/2005 20:07

DS was around the 150 mark, which some say is meant to mean a girl. This one's the same. I think it'll be a baby, for definite

edodgy · 27/10/2005 20:08

oh yeah they also say that if it sounds like a train its a girl and if it sounds like a horse trotting its a boy. This was true for me too!

Frizbe · 27/10/2005 20:09

They say girls 150 plus!

PeachyClair · 27/10/2005 20:37

All three boys were at 145 and sounded like a horse trotting

I did ask midwife if this was a good theory, she said well you should know..

So I guess she believed it!

HumphreysCorner · 27/10/2005 21:43

My midwife was so convinced that I was having a boy by the heartbeat (even though the 20 week scan had showed a girl) that she brought round a boys growth chart book when she came to see me after DD was born.

Have heard that girls have higher heartbeats so don't know what happened with DD.

anywhere between 120-160 is normal (iirc)
the higher the rate, the more likely to be a girl.
so your's is very very average and can't tell anything
soz

Mum2OneAndBump · 27/10/2005 21:48

How many weeks are you Zephyrrywitchescat?

flamebat · 27/10/2005 21:50

pmsl - How do you know the difference between a horse trotting heart and a train one when you don't have the two to compare??? I was listening last week, and I thought it could have easily been either!!! We with a horse sitting on a runaway train in the end

Mum2OneAndBump · 27/10/2005 21:51

When i first done my babys heart rate on my doppler at around 10 weeks it was very high 165 but when i got to about 4 months and done it the heart rate was down to about 145, We are having a girl i would say yours is maybe a Boy !

princesspeahead · 27/10/2005 21:58

i don't think it is a load of crap, I think it is true. higher for a girl, lower for a boy. I'd say yours was lower. It's a BOY!!!

(but don't redecorate the nursery on the basis of it....)

Zephyrrywitchescat · 27/10/2005 22:08

Sorry I wrote this then went off! I'm 16 weeks...ish!

It made no sense for DD though - when I went for monitoring at 37 odd weeks, hers fluctuated between 125 and 155....

buffytheharpsichordcarrier · 28/10/2005 08:23

no, it's not an old wives tale. but your's is def average...

I was told that it was only in labour that this theory worked. The midwife told me once you were in labour you could jolly well wait a few hours and find out for yourself.

HumphreysCorner · 28/10/2005 11:46

Just tie your wedding ring to a piece of cotton and hold it directly above your bump. After a short while it will move and if it goes in a circle it is a girl but if it moves in a dead straight line then it is a boy.

Have got 100% success rate with this method and will do it on myself when I am about 12 weeks as it doesn't work until about then or later.

Bit of fun.
