My dh booked this quite a while ago for 13th May when our baby is due. Now he has a job offer with another company - seems like better pay, conditions etc. however he should start next week if he decides to take it, but I don't think he'll be eligible for paternity leave. What can he do? he also booked some holidays after the paternity leave as this is our fourth child and i had a c section last time, so may need one again (tho I'm going to try a VBAC first), therefor wld need extra help with the kids, dropping one off at school and around the house etc.

One of my friends moved jobs just before his wife had their first baby, the company said it was fine for him to have paternity the full leave at the interview he had, but when the time came they wouldn't honour it and they gave him 3 days! What ever you do agree with them get it written into his contract! Basically they can do what they like above and beyond the legal rules, but they don't have to exceed them. But don't ask, don't get right!

I find that at the point you're offered a job is the point to make deals - Tell him to be honest with the employer and say he is very committed and excited about the prospect of working for them but this is the situation and ask if the'y be willing to honour his paternity leave. I would have thought that most companies would see value in looking after their staff. It's not like he's looking for 6 months off.

Having said that, at dh's company, most men only take one week by choice. DH cannot work out why as he's their manager and is happy for them to take 2 weeks (he's a real family man). Sounds like lots of his employees don't like newborns and want to be back at work - very odd!

Thank you, I'll tell him that Smile
