I've just seen another thread with heavy gaviscon use mentioned. This is a mystery to me! What are people using it for? What does it do? I'm 27 weeks tomorrow, is this something I'm going to discover the wonders of in the last trimester? Confused

I had a large bottle next to the bed from about 33 weeks with both pgs. I didn't measure, I swigged!

Its for heartburn which is very common through out pregnancy but gets much worse the further along you are - I'm jealous you ahve got this far with out it! Grin

oh just thought, did I read somewhere you can get it free in boots with your exemption form? Do you need a subscription first or just the form and a bump!? I'm paying for mine but at £6 a bottle its quite pricey!

I rang my GP and got a prescription - free obv.

I'm 40 weeks and have used loads of the pg friendly gaviscon tablets...only last week did it dawn on me that I should have got the prescription from the Dr and used exemption certificate.....duh!

I didn't get heartburn til 32 weeks or so, but when it started it was evil (still is)! I wake up sometimes with a jolt with reflux that feels like im going to choke. Even a sip of water gives me terrible pain and reflux. I have a routine of eating a yogurt and drinking a glass of water, then taking 2 tsps of gaviscon before going to bed. Afterwards can't drink anymore water cos it flushes the gaviscon away rendering it useless. now i can sleep til 6 before I wake up with a raging thirst.
It has gone away a bit now that the baby's descended - I'm 37 weeks.
hope you don't get it!

Gaviscon is a saviour! I used it from 28 weeks and had a bootle in my handbag and one on my bedside cabinet.
I think if I get pregnant again, I'll buy shares in the company Grin

I needed gaviscon very infrequently before 30 weeks (for hearturn, reflux and indigestion in general!). Since then I need it after every meal, before bed, and in between...

Thanks everybody, sounds like something to not look forward to! It's prompted me to remember to send off the free prescriptions form, just in case.
