When did you buy your first baby item?

I'm a little (ok lot!) superstitious and I'd wait until baby arrived if I could to buy anything but I'm not stupid and realise that I need to prepare and that financially, buying things early makes a lot of sense. We're waiting until our 20 week scan to start buying ... and then I think I may shop shop shop! I havn't a clue when you should start on the nursery (walls and carpet are neutral already so no decorating required) and if it's ok to stock up on nappies early? Any advice from already mummies would be great thanks! x

I bought a couple of vests at about 9 weeks, made it seem a bit more real! I know some people won't buy stuff until much later on. DH wouldn't have the pram in the house until DD was born despite that being needed straight away for the car seat Hmm but it was seemingly OK to have her room set up even though she wouldn't need it for months.

With DS I bought a book at about 3 months. We brought all the equipment at 6-7 months. The nursery was given a coat of paint around the same time. We should have practised putting in the car seat TBH, XP was reading the instructions in the hospital car park after when we bought DS home - I wasn't able to help having had an EMCS at 37 weeks.

With DD I bought a pink sleepsuit and the double pushchair after the 20 week scan. Everything was built, un-packed, sorted and ready to go from about 8 months.

Both times I had newborn nappies in the house for the last month or so.

23 weeks! I bought bedding and bedroom set. I am still kinda waiting to buy anything else i.e. the big stuff even though have picked pram etc as it still feels a little early. Maybe circa 28 weeks I'll feel better - when baba is more viable if decided to put in an early appearance.

when I got the result of my amnio I went to buy some sleepsuits Smile

6 weeks - I was at a sale in our local church and got some knitted boots. I had had an early scan as my preg is high risk. Early days anyway though.

Am now 23 weeks and have a few items of clothing, a bath, about 10 packs of wipes. Also loads of nappies that I picked up mega cheap at a NCT sale. Will be getting cotbed and pram in the next couple of weeks.

Have been clearing out stuff to make space but we aren't decorating the spare room. Baby will be in with us for quite a while so no hurry on that score.

Just buy when you feel ready. My friend didn't get anything til she was 39 weeks (good reasons for this) and they managed just fine.

I bought a tie-dyed babygrow when I was 30 something weeks pregnant just because I liked it and then some cloth nappies a couple of weeks before she was born. Otherwise, I bought nothing at all. Grin

Friends/family donated clothes, dd slept in with us, my brother gave us his travel system (though I made some slings soon after giving birth and mainly used them) and I bfed. Didn't need anything else.

I saw 30 weeks as a bit of a milestone and let myself buy stuff after that. HTH

Im 16 weeks pg.

I had a little collection of baby bits (that ex bosses have given me nannying, for as and when the time came) which i have had for a while. A few years for some bits!
I paid money for my 1st baby items (washable nappies from a close friend who needed cash suddenly so sold the out grown nappies) about 9 months before planning to get pg.

Since getting PG I have got a fair bit of stuff too, but all bargains. I swear i live next door to the cheapest charity shop in the whole world, and have picked up 2 baby seats, look new, id even say never used, and were £1 each, so will have one at my mums, and other at MILs. (will have a brand new one here but know exactly which one!)
Have also got from there (I only get immaculate stuff, and rarely pay more than 30p, often 10p or less) Beautiful baby gym from ELC, a baby swimming wet suit thing with a happy nappy, some lovely new born black and white baby books, some especially nice baby toys / rattles etc etc, reins, M&P portable change mat, a gro bag (will buy new but will be a perfect spare for sickness etc) Moses basket and M&P sheets, same one costs £60 in mothercare (paid £2) a lindam wide opening stair gate with all the fixings (£1) (will need at least 4 when baby becomes mobile) a closer to nature steriliser, (boxed looks unused), a baby door bouncer, tiny love car seat toy, a couple of M&S snow suits, and a few little bits of clothes (all immaculate, id guess never worn) and mainly M&S / next, some BNIP closer to nature milk feeding bibs (with the absorbant neck) and im sure a load more bits that i have forgotten.

I know exactly what i want already, whilst nannying i have used many things that i know i want and lots of things i know i dont want.

A couple of weeks ago went to my local NCT sale, and got quite a few more bargains, (including my dream 'tiny love' baby mat / gym RRP £50 for a fiver, packaged and absolutey as new!) (I got several bags full of lovely stuff, that i knew i wanted for £30!)

the only main thing i have bought brand new so far, is my bargain mountain buggy from ebay. Again i new exactly which one i wanted (and wanted one from the old factory in NZ, not the new factory in China, which has been up and running nearly 2 years now) and was happy to get a 'used' one as from NZ. Anyway i found the most bargain brand new one on ebay, so i had to have it. In the year i have been watching MB's on ebay, i have never seen a new one quite so cheap, and would have been willing to pay quite a bit more for a used one.

I dont intend to buy much brand new stuff until I am at least 30 weeks, but when I seee things for 20p in the shop almost next door, and they are boxed, hardly used, immaculate, and things i will be buying one day anyway, i cant resisit!
Also on our holiday we will be going past the tommee tippee outlet shop so will be popping in for some reduced price brand new closer to nature bottles / teats / milk pots etc etc. (Things which IMO need to be new)

nannyl · 26/03/2011 17:27

Oh and the room which will be the nursey was decorated last year, knowing it would be the nursery.

just need to sort out the stuff inside and add baby furniture etc
