Boys name common to both Christian & Muslim traditions? HELP PLEASE!!!

We are so stuck. We really want to honour both our cultures but boys names are sooo much harder to agree on than girls names! The only name I like common to both traditions is Zacharia but DH's brother is already called that and we have one on our street. I'm not a huge fan of Adam or Sami (bit plain), DH doesn't like Noah (something about an ark). Any name seems like a bit of a compromise at the moment... please help!!

they have more then one way of sayin lion!! where do you think c s lewis it the name from!!!

deen or din is an islamic name, but it usually oes alon with somethin else, like allau din or salah din, or deen al somethin and some scholars say it is disliked to use the names deen or islam, so i dont know what your dh would think of that, but it is arabic

kittens · 25/03/2011 00:00

Harris, Niall are a couple of others

muminthecity · 25/03/2011 00:18

Yahya is one of my favourite names ever, it's Arabic for Joshua, pronounced Ya-he-ya. I love Heshaam for a boy as well, though not very Christian!
What about Omar?

mama2plusbump · 25/03/2011 06:13

Aaron is actually haroon

AKissIsNotAContract · 25/03/2011 06:28

How about Maroun?

sh77 · 25/03/2011 12:45

We just named our son Ismael (Is-ma-eel) - problem is that people are finding it hard to pronounce. We have had Ish-mail, Is-mail, Is-mile, Is-ma-heel. I think it is a beautiful name and common to all three religions.

TheNewShmoo · 25/03/2011 12:47

I like Saladin... a bit of a grand old heavy name even for DH I thinks!!!

Jakub.

I love Adam but totally biased. Not dull at all. Not met many either. Have a similar problem. Am Greek and dh is English so like names that go across cultures.

megapixels · 25/03/2011 14:45

Just looked it up. Aslan is the turkish word, not arabic.

Doesn't sound like an appropriate name for a tiny baby :).

kirrinIsland · 25/03/2011 15:01

I hear Aslan, I think Narnia - which is a shame 'cos it's a lovely name. We had the same situation and found it so much easier to come up with girls names than boys. Luckily we had a girl! The only boys name we agreed on was Ali, which I really like. I also liked Solomon/Sulaman but DP said it was quite old fashioned. He wasn't very helpful really - mostly he just veto'd my suggestions Grin

TheNewShmoo · 25/03/2011 15:26

a bit like my DH then!

Suleiman is lovely- v classic

Where I work lots of the children have Muslim names and we have lots named Adam. Eesa is also quite common and spelt lots of ways. A Muslim friend told me that Eesa was the name Jesus was known by in the Koran.

Harris/Haaris is a lovely name and we only have one of those!

Good luck!

Firawla · 26/03/2011 20:14

If you liked the sound of Hari then Haris would be good?

zain?
luqman? (bit like luke..)
bilal? (bit like billy..)
rafi?
idris? (aparently its a welsh name too, although dont know if you want welsh)

CosySlippers · 10/05/2011 19:08

How about:
Aden
Aiman
Rayan
Ramzi
Nial
Raiss
Laiq
Leith
Zayn

hockeyforjockeys · 10/05/2011 20:32

muminthecity I've taught a Yayha (incidentially one of my favourite kids ever!), but he pronounced it Yai-yay. Might be a regional pronounciation though from his parents home country though.

HotShots000 · 21/02/2016 13:50

The muslim name for Gabriel is Jibril.

julfin · 21/02/2016 16:06

My friends in similar situation had a Haris and a Rafi. I particularly love the name Rafi - and it has the advantage of being a short-form of Raphael/Raffael in Christian culture.

Also Zarif, Zafir, Kalil, Kafil, Karif, Faris, Jalal, Safir are all nice imo.

They are very much Arabic rather than Christian names but they work well in English - easy to pronounce etc.

Congrats!

notagiraffe · 21/02/2016 16:09

What's wrong with naming your son after your DH's brother? He'd probably feel flattered, and Zacharia is a brilliant name.
