Boys name common to both Christian & Muslim traditions? HELP PLEASE!!!

We are so stuck. We really want to honour both our cultures but boys names are sooo much harder to agree on than girls names! The only name I like common to both traditions is Zacharia but DH's brother is already called that and we have one on our street. I'm not a huge fan of Adam or Sami (bit plain), DH doesn't like Noah (something about an ark). Any name seems like a bit of a compromise at the moment... please help!!

I'm not sure if Esah, Joshua and Jesus are all the same name, different languages.

TheNewShmoo · 24/03/2011 22:06

Don't know why- but I expect Reuben to be a particular kind of person?? Confused V quaint... bourgeois... so much in a name!

I think Reuben is Jewish ;) btw I knew a little Italian boy called Ruben and he was adorable! :)

Hari is def. not Arabic - it is Hindu

I think I will have to succumb to Adam - it is still the nicest one (to me) which fits in all languages!

mama2plusbump · 24/03/2011 22:29

Joshua has a different name in arabic icant remember now.
Harri may be persian but not a muslim name iykwim

MerryMarigold · 24/03/2011 22:31

My ds1's class has 2 Adam's. Their names are not 'Adam' anymore, but 'AdamE' and 'AdamT'. Even when kids see them outside school they shout, "Hey AdamE"...

Beesok · 24/03/2011 22:40

Joshua in Arabic is Yihya (I think....)

Beesok · 24/03/2011 22:42

The "problem" with Arabic names is that they are generally hard to pronounce to non-Arabs - at least the ones I like, and having lived through the whole "weirdest" name in class I would like to save my kids the hassle ;)

Leilababyno1 · 24/03/2011 22:52

There are loads of lovely Arab names, that are still also European. Definitely more for girls though than boys.

My mum is British and my father is Libyan, they called me Leila and my sister Hannah- both very easy to pronounce acurately and still Arab. We have chosen 'Zeena' for our soon-to-be DDs middle name..

Leilababyno1 · 24/03/2011 22:53

accurately...Blush Typo

TheNewShmoo · 24/03/2011 22:54

i know a few two couples with muslim men and christian women.
their children are called
daniel
aadam
abraham
all mentioned on this list i see!
i think adam is a nice name and not that common around here...

lovemybabyboy · 24/03/2011 23:06

I am in the same situation also, my DH is muslim and I am not. Our DS has a English first name and a Muslim middle name, all my family call him by his first name and all DHs family call him by his muslim name, it works ok and he answers to both names.
I am 9 weeks pregnant with DC2 and this time I would like for the baby to just have a muslim name that is easy to pronounce for my family, so that everyone will call it the same name! I like Adam, Malik and Jamal. I havnt thought of a girls name yet as I am convinced it will be a boy but there is plenty of time and there are loads of lovely muslim girl names!
The only thing is I need one that goes with my sons english first name! I love my sons name but sometimes wish i had just agreed on a muslim name only, as then it would be easier to pick another muslim name to go with it!

Hi beesok from October 2011! Smile
