Tips on getting out and about with bad Morning sickess

I have had awful morning sickness for 5 weeks now. I literally feel sick and dizzy just from standing up, and am throwing up on and off too.

I have barely left bed let alone house in 5 weeks :(

Im really excited about my 12 week scan tommorrow, but I just checked and it's a 25 minute journey. I dont know how to cope with all the moving in the car, waiting upright in appoitment room etc (I cant even sit up for too long it makes sickness worse)

Any tips on how to handle the journey etc?

Thank you :)

I actually find hard boiled sweets help. I can concentrate on them rather than smells and nausea.

Go to your GP for an anti-emetic. If your hyperemesis is that bad you should have your urine dipped for ketones, you may require 'rapid rehydration' and anti-emetic drugs. Oh sorry, have just noticed it is tomorrow! If you see a midwife/doctor after your scan be sure to discuss your symptoms with them.

Some people swear by those travel bands you wear on your wrists, that might help?

Roseflower · 23/03/2011 19:43

Oh Im might try the sweets thanks. I tried the bands but they did nothing!

The Midwife did a home visit but said as I was keeping things down it wasn't too serious. I was put on tablets by the doctor, something beginning with 'C' but they didn't help.

I wish the scan could come to me!

Recline your seat in the car as much as you can so you aren't so upright.
Take a bowl or sick bag!
Def agree with boiled sweets. Mint ones helped me most.
Bottle of water to sip.
Other than that just accept that you will feel like shit and will prob be sick a couple of times and just get on with it.
It prob won't be as bad as you are anticipating!

I had v similar and am now 19 weeks and feeling more or less ok. Started feeling better about 15 weeks I think. Not long for you to go!

Roseflower · 23/03/2011 19:58

Thank you for the tips! I guess the fact I haven't been in the car for so long is probably making the anticaption worse

Def take a plastic bowl or bag cos yr likely to be sick.

Do the driving yourself if you can manage - I've always found the exhaustion leads me to say to DH, oh you drive, and then the sickness is much worse than if I drive myself ... not sure why??

Allow plenty of time, don't worry too much about trying to get the litre of water in (or whatever they want you to have drunk b4) - I've never managed more than a sip without throwing up and all 4 of mine were scanned successfully at 12 weeks.

Seeing Bubs for the first time is magical ... all the rest passes but that image will stay with you. Smile

I liked fishermans friends. Really strong flavour seemed to help.

Astrophe · 24/03/2011 06:47

ice cold water and ice cubes in a thermos. Was one of very few things that helped me. Lemon in the water sometimes helped too, and also the smell of lemon/lemon oil. And of course nibbling on whatever you can stomach.

Roseflower · 25/03/2011 09:54

Thank you so much everyone! I was lucky as I seemed to get all my throwing up done before we left.

Seeing baby on the scan made every bit of the suffering worthwhile. Despite everything was truly one the very best days of my life
