"Nub theory" - is it nonsense or...?

I heard about this yesterday - the idea that depending on the angle of the "nub" (the developing genitalia shown on the scan) you can take a fair guess at the sex of the child. What's everyone's opinions on this? Is it just a load of silly nonsense that'll entertain us before Scan 2 or might there be something to it...? My baby's "nub" seems to suggest a boy...

no it's true - the angle of the genital tubercle - I've had the sex identified at 12 & 13 week scans with two of mine (that was at the Fetal Medicine Centre in London) ... not sure of you could persuade an NHS sonographer to look though!

At my 12 week (private) scan the doc thought it was a boy - at the 20 week scan so did the sonographer :)

I shall be somewhat surprised if it turns out to be a girl after all that!

It is true - the FMC got it spot on at 12 weeks.

On various boards I have been on, there's a lot of obsession over this and we often have polls to see who was right. There's about an 80% success rate seemingly.

Part of the issue is that people are guessing based on photos and what they think is the nub when it may well be the cord or a leg. Plus with boys, the nub only starts rising after about 12 weeks or so, so sometimes boys can be guessed to be girls. I had two NT scans and at the first the nub did look girly although that was just going on me staring at the screen rather than the sonographer (NHS - refused to look at this stage, most will!) examining it. FMC was fine with looking and she definitively said boy. 8 scans and an amnio later, he's still a boy!!

As a little update, I had my second scan today and my baby's been confirmed as a boy. Maybe there's some truth to nub theory after all :) - although as my partner likes to point out, I had a 50:50 chance of getting it right.
