Folic acid?

I have always been told to stop taking my FA at 12 weeks.

Is this correct or is it safe to continue it? I have googled and read some conflicting answers so thought I would answer here.

Perhaps I should change to an all in one multivitamin or something?

I fear I haven't taken enough of the FA due to HG. Excessive vomiting makes it hard to swallow the pills.

TIA for any advice :)

i take a pregnancy multi-vitamin which contains focis acid and says its OK to take throughout pregnancy. I think it is most important to take it before 12 weeks but won't do any harm if you take it for longer.

All of the pregnancy multivits contain a 400ug dose of folic acid. So if you take one of those (I am taking Sainsbury's ones as they looked as good as any of the more expensive ones in terms of contents, and were on 3-for-2) you will continue to get the same dose. As far as I am aware there is no danger to continuing at this relatively low dose throughout pregnancy. If you are taking higher doses, e.g. for familial risk of neural tube defects, then consult your MW or ob before changing your regimen.

it depends on your medical history. my consultant advised me to take it throughout pregnancy due my medical history... I have been taking it as part of multi-vitamin anyway (Viridian)... You should definitely taking pregnancy vitamins.

Ok thanks for your replies, I will have a look in Sainsbury's next time I'm in there. It is their brand of Folic Acid I am taking so will take a look at their multi-vitamins too :)

My consultant told me that it doesn't do any harm to continue taking folic acid beyond the 12 weeks. In both my pregnancys I took it to at least 20 weeks. I have to take a prescription dose during my pregnanys so I am sure that if it's ok to take that it would be fine for you to take the (much) lower dose.
