Spatone and Pregnacare?

Can I take a sachet of Spatone and Pregnacare tablet? Or is it too much iron???

I did both as I was anaemic and DD was absolutely fine. In fact I had to stop both and take a whopping great dose of iron which made my poo turn black (sorry tmi!). DD was 10lb when she came out mind you, but fine!

The best way to be sure is to add together the amount of iron in both items then google that. I do also think that spatone is unusual as it easily dissolvable iron and doesn't hang around unneccesarily but I might have that wrong.

I took both during pregnancy with DD1 and it was fine.

I started taking Pregnacare and 400mg of ferrous sulphate daily in October but my Hb count was still low (9.4). MW suggested adding two Spatone per day, so I've been on all three since November and my iron levels have been around 10.5.

I make sure to take the iron supplements with orange juice and away from tea/coffee (even decaf because I've been told it's the tannin in these drinks not the caffeine that can inhibit absorption), dairy and whole grains.

Luckily, no problems with constipation or other side effects from the ferrous sulphate, but I make sure to eat a lot of fruit and fibre-rich food too.

If you're still not sure, just ask your MW or GP.

Too much iron can be toxic so just check with one of your carers first.

One sachet of Spatone has 5mg of iron in it and Pregnacare tablet has 17mg. The recommended amount of iron per day for a preg woman is 27mg so I am thinking it should be fine - may even take two sachets of Spatone now...

Good to know re taking it away from even decaf tea, I thought that would be ok!
