She thought it 'may' be a girl but she said she wasnt in any way sure. Has this happened to anyone else?

looks like LO wants you to be kept guessing. It happens, it isn't all that uncommon - I hope you weren't desperate to find out.

Grumpla · 17/03/2011 13:15

I think this is fairly common isn't it? At 20 weeks the 'bits' still look pretty similar on an ultrasound and if the baby is not at a co-operative angle it can be difficult to see.

Even if you are told, it isn't 100% accurate. My SiL is a doctor, she says they are quite often wrong! She had two doctor friends (one of whom was an obstetrician) who found out that they were having a "girl", painted the nursery pink, bought about a million pink frilly frocks etc... very surprised when she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy!

bishboschone · 17/03/2011 13:20

we were quite 'keen' to find out . Legs werent crossed. It looked the a girl to me but she said she wasnt sure at all. Can boys bit be hidden?

My son hid his bits at the 20 week scan andwe were told he was a girl. At 32 weeks he had lost all shyness and the first thing I saw on the scan was very large testicles!

bishboschone · 17/03/2011 13:34

Thanks going..I have anothe scan at 30 weeks so we will see then. I am very happy either way as we have had a rough pregnancy and all was well.

hmmm... this thread has me all worried now. 39+4 and been planning for a girl for 19 weeks now. I've tried to stick with neutral colours but my family and friends haven't. Hmm

exexpat · 17/03/2011 13:38

I had a scan with DS at 19 weeks but they couldn't tell, so I didn't find out till another scan a few weeks before he was born. With DD I had scans at least once a month for the whole pregnancy but they never managed to catch her in the right position (though the scans were for monitoring, not for checking gender) so she was a surprise.

Two of my friends were told at 20-week scans that they were having girls, so went out and bought pink stuff, but ended up with boys.

Yellowstone · 17/03/2011 13:39

I was told the sex of my last four children at 9 weeks. Admittedly the consultant was an expert. It doesn't seem to be the jokey thing of 'legs crossed' which they look at but the girls' reproductive organs, which I understood to be clearly visible at 20 weeks. It may still be the case (as it was when I had my last child nine years ago)that in some areas of the country as a matter of policy they simply don't like to reveal the gender.

that makes me feel better exepat, thanks

My baby had legs crossed throughout our 20 week scan and the sonographer did say that he couldn't be sure on gender, but THOUGHT it was probably a girl....Had a 32 week growth scan recently, it was a consultant who did the scan- she was certain we are having a girl!

If you've got another scan booked much later down the line(after 30 wks)- they can tell you almost 100% either way! Good-Luck!

shoofly · 17/03/2011 20:09

Have had a scan last week - 33 weeks and the consultant still cannot tell gender due to position. Baby has finally moved from breech position though Grin

wolfcubEm83 · 17/03/2011 21:44

Exactly the same happened to me. Sonographer was a moody b!tch though Angry she said 'it looks like a girl but im not sure'
We are going to buy unisex stuff just in case (but we do refer to my bump as a she occasionally now Blush
I get another scan at 32 weeks as baby had an elevated kidney measurement, i hope to God its not that miserable cow again so i can confirm

Northernrose · 17/03/2011 21:57

This happened to us with dc2 at our 20 wk scan too..(now 27 wks)..think the midwife was getting a bit frustrated that she couldn't tell because the wee one was being 'very modest' with legs closed and wriggling about. We are both in the medical profession and would have some idea on a scan if it was obvious but all of a sudden when we felt she was about to give up she said 'oh yes looks like it 'might' be a girl'

Either way we're happy but we only asked to find out for ourselves, not anyone else as we won't be telling anyone!

Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes more smoothly bish and that you enjoy finding out at your next scan Smile

bishboschone · 18/03/2011 17:46

thanks northern rose
