I'm very early into my first pregnancy (six weeks from first day of last period, but I ovulated late, so am closer to four weeks I think) and, because of some light bleeding, got an early scan today. They could see a gestational sac but no yolk sac and I'm worried.

I know I shouldn't "Internet-diagnose" but am reading lots of stuff about empty sacs pointing to miscarriage. I'm so worried. We've been TTC for nearly six months and were so happy when we got the positive test. Anyone else had experience of this or any advice?

I had this - no yolk sac at 5 weeks from last period, worried myself sick, at 6.5 weeks there was a heartbeat. I know it's hard but try not to worry - and do step away from Google - I found lots of things on HcG levels which said I wasn't having a viable pregnancy - DS is now 18 months old!

Thank you for the reassurance. Glad to hear that you had a happy ending - I guess I have to take a deep breath and try and be positive. Just hard not to imagine the worst, you know...

Hi Trina

I had an early scan at 6 weeks because I'm diabetic. There was a gestational sac but not a lot else. The consultant who did my scan was very negative, he actually said he thought my pregnancy wasn't viable. So I really prepared myself for the worst. Like you I knew I ovulated late and I knew I wasn't as far on as they were saying I was. I went back for a scan a week later and there it was, a little pulsing jelly bean!

So four weeks is very very early for a scan. I know the wait is hard, it was horrible for me. But its so early its not necessarily bad news. And keep away from Google! I was 99% certain I'd miscarried after spending an afternoon googling and I was wrong - it isn't worth it!

When are you having another scan?

xx

If you know you ovulated late and are only 4 weeks you saw exactly what you'd expect to see on a scan.

Really you'd only expect to see a baby/heartbeat from 6/7 weeks. Early scans show very little.

Will they repeat scan? The only other thing they can do is to blood tests now and again in a couple of days to see if your hcg is going up. Otherwise a scan in 10 days or so will show if the pregnancy is developing.

Thank you both. I'm going for a second scan a week on Thursday (which seems a lifetime away!). They were talking in a similar tone to your consultant, MrsCLH, which didn't help. I didn't really feel like they were listening when I was saying that I wasn't that far along. I even asked my GP whether it was worth waiting a bit longer given my dates, but she said I should go ASAP...

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm going to cross my fingers for a jelly bean on the next one! xx

I had an early scan due to bleeding, at what turned out to be 5+5, and just saw gest sac, 2 weeks later there was a HB and yolk sac

After the first the sonographer was very negative and told me it wasn't viable, luckily the MW wanted to wait a bit to see what happened. It's so so early and they are looking for fractions of milimeters, I think it is possible to miss something

Also, the dr and sonographer refused to take into account my long cycles and therefore later implantation

I hope the next week goes quickly for you, and you have some good news xx

MrsCLH · 15/03/2011 10:06

You will have to let us know how you get on Trina. Good luck, and hope the wait is not too awful. Just keep busy if you can, rubbish advice I know but you just gotta get through it somehow :-)

Take care hun xx

Hi guys,

Just wanted to thank you all for taking the time to reply and to update you - had the second scan today and saw a tiny little heart beat! I'm so relieved and happy - the sonographer was brilliant this time - really explained everything to me and made a bit of a fuss of me.

Turns out that it was extremely early last time - I'm only about five weeks now (so less a jelly bean more a grain of rice) so it was no wonder I didn't see much last time (just like you all said).

Anyway, just wanted to say thank you for talking me off the google ledge. I felt a bit silly at first, but now I'm really glad I posted here - it made me feel loads better whilst waiting for today to come.

Thanks again xxx
