Placenta Praevia?

I was told that i have this at my 20w scan a couple of weeks ago.

wasn't an issue was quite relaxed about it and confident it would probably move. However as now thinking of a home birth i am interseted to hear from others who were diagnosed with this...

did the placenta move?? or not?

Unfortunately not, but apparently i was one of the 'unlucky' 5%. I could not have had a HB, but my symptoms presented themselves at 31 weeks, so well before they would do a scan to check whether it had moved (usually around 34-36 weeks IIRC)

hope you don't mind me asking crispy? did you go in with bleeding? is that hwo yours was detected?

No, i don't mind at all Nicola Smile. I had a brownish discharge at 29 weeks when they said the placenta was still low lying and then a big bleed at 31 weeks. I was kept in for 5 days (they threatened 5 weeks Shock) and then another bleed at 36 weeks when i had a (rather lovely, it has to be said CS).

I know of lots of other people whose moved out of the way (in line with the 95% moving statistic)

Have they said if yours is Grade 3 or 4?

nicolamumof3 · 11/03/2011 21:24

no it was only the sonographer which said .oh your placenta's in the way' so i asked what she meant by that, just said off the cuff 'oh its low lying' then carried on with scan didn't even look at me. So i asked what that meant. She just said it would probably move but if not would mean a CS and to book for another scan at 34w.

I do have a 4d before that at 28w so hopefully they will be able to tell me then too.

Not sure at which stage i have to request a HB i remember last time i was waiting for results of GBS test and was told too late to book a HB at 36w.

When they told me it was VERY played down and almost a throwaway comment (i guess because most move). It was only when i went in with the discharge at 31 weeks that the MW said if i had any bleeding that i was to call an ambulance straight away. I was a bit Hmm at the time as everyone had been so blase, however when i did have the bleed we called an ambulance..... no messing!

I think if you are having a 4d at 28 weeks, that is fab. THe NHS only rescans at about 36 weeks, which having heard many peoples stories is too late Sad

CrispyTheCrisp · 11/03/2011 21:30

Sorry, meant 29 weeks

nicolamumof3 · 11/03/2011 21:31

yes only through reading up i've heard about the bleeding, no one mentioned about it at all. tho in fairness not due to see midwife for another couple of weeks.

Am also high risk GDD so have to have the glucose test at 26w. This is my fourth and final pg..and most testing to date!! Songorapher said a girl after three boys as well. So we'll see.

That must have been really scary Crispy, glad you received such good care though.

LOL, mine was a girl too Grin

I won't lie, it was bloody scary, but then i didn't know anything it might involve. I do think i would have preferred to be better prepared and hence i will try and answer any PP questions on here. DD was born at 36 weeks by CS (which as i mentioned was great Smile), but didn't need any special care and we were discharged within 24hrs

As I said, 95% move, so i hope yours does and you get the all clear for a lovely HB Smile

nicolamumof3 · 12/03/2011 08:58

Thanks I think its essential to be informed about any condition even if its rare that i may bleed or that the placenta may not move. I hate hospitals so much that i probably would have been reluctant to go straight in whereas now i know that its important to get in immediately.

Hi. Mine was only briefly mentioned at 20 week scan. Brown discharge at 27+4. Spent the afternoon in the day ass unit. The did say it is nothing to worry about. At 27+5 I found myself admitted to hospital with a big bleed. I stayed until 37 weeks when dc was delivered by elcs. No bleeds til then but high risk as grade 3. One of the unfortunate 2%. Don't worry to much but I would take even a brownish discharge seriously and insist on another scan.
