Help! Protein in urine in pregnancy- what does it mean?

Hello

At my last mw appointment (16 weeks), there was a small amount of protein in my urine. I was quite healthy otherwise.

Is this anything to worry about (it happened at the end of the appointment, so didn't have time to discuss and mw seemed unconcerned)? I know that in later pregnancy it can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, but surely not that early.

My (vet, not doctor!) friend says it can be a sign that I'm having a boy (but that may only be true of sheep or something!) and I had had sex the night before, so is there a possiblity it might not have been my protein(IYSWIM!)?

Any thoughts appreciated!

It could be a sign of gestational diabetes if it comes up a few times. Often its nothing. I had it twice during my pg and had neither GD nor a boy.

It can be a sign of a urine infection. Happended to me early on the second time and that's what it was.

Not sure about the boy thing as I have not heard that before.

Even in late pregnancy it may not mean pre-eclampsia or a urine infection but just that your body is getting overloaded and your kidneys are processing waste product less efficiently.

Wouldn't worry too much. At this stage I'm sure they'll just send the urine to the lab to confirm infection and make sure that is indeed what it is.

  • unexplained
  • contamination (vaginal discharge)
  • infection
  • pre-eclampsia

They'll probably send off an MSU to check for infection but it may well be nothing at all - I had +1 on Sunday, urine was clear on Monday & MSU came back negative on Tuesday.

I had this and was just a urine infection. Took (foul tasting) antibiotics for a week and it went away. Most likely it's nothing to worry about.

I have a UTi and had protein in urine. It is going away after a few days of antibiotics.
