Moses basket vs glider crib dilemma...HELP!

Hi

I as just wondering what mumsnetters are going for...we don't really have a space problem so either is okay but....

I hear that moses baskets are really only okay for up to 3 months before baby gets too big. Cribs on the other hand last a bit longer but can't be used after baby starts to be able to pull himself up.....so is this about 6 months...

Is it more cost efficient to get a crib?

What's everyone's experience or expectations?

we used a crib a bit like this which lasted us 6 months. DD was pretty small though, so if she was average size she may have outgrown it sooner. Lovely and cosy. We also had a moses basket in the living room which was very handy as I could keep an eye on her during daytime naps, plonk her down somewhere safe etc. BUT we were given the crib by a family member (second hand) so I don't know if I would have bought both. Was great not having to carry the basket between parts of the house though

Before DD was born, we 'booked' a crib on the mothercare baby plan (about £115 I think). We cancelled this before she was born though, as I thought it was extortionate a bit unnecessary if the moses basket I had been given would do the job instead.

However, DD would not settle at all in the moses basket, and after 2 weeks we ended up buying a crib - we got a lovely swinging one from Toys R Us in the sale for about £40 I think).

She immediately slept really well in this (poor little love was probably knackered ) until she was 5 months and we moved her into her cot. She was a long baby and she like crawling up to the top of the crib in her sleep so kept head-butting the top and waking me up - otherwise we'd probably have kept her in it until she was 6 months.

We had a gliding crib (about £100 in John Lewis) and dd slept in it until 6.5 months.

Quite a few friends spent similar amounts on moses baskets and stands, yet needed to move their babies into cots at around 4 months.

The advantage of moses baskets is that they are easily portable, but you could use pram/travel cot for downstairs naps.

I had the same debate when I was PG with my DC1.

I opted for a gliding crib from Mamas and Papas, my DS was in this until about 7 months, he was 8.9lb born and was quite long, he still actually fitted in the crib when we moved him into his cot. We moved him because he could sit himself up and the safest option was for him to be in the cot.

Hmmm...sounds lie a crib is the way to go....am trying to decided between a glider and a swinging one now! The swinging ones are cheaper but look a bit more flimsy....what do you think?

We went for a glider (£100 from John Lewis) as all the display models of the swinging ones squeaked!

We were given a drop-side cot by a relative so will move baby to that when he's bigger.

mine sleep in a swinging crib that has been used in our family for the past 40 years! Myself and my siblings and all our children have used it. I can't wait to get it out again. Mine all slept well and were in it until approx 6 months usually had to move to the cot as they were starting to be too mobile rather than size.

It isn't an essential but they are lovely and the babies seem so lost in a big cot. I was very lucky to be given a moses basket last time and this was very useful for having donwstairs but if i could only chose 1 i'd go for a crib every time.

If you are planning more it'll be a good investment and if not you can always sell it

£100 for a moses basket and stand?! Where on earth did they buy that from?!

I also used a crib that had been in our family for nearly 40 years. He rarely napped when he wasn't on my knee but if he did I put him in the carrycot attachment from the pram.

Stupid question - whats a glider crib?

I would buy a bedside cot if space isn't an issue.

Personally I don't think it's a good idea to start introducing gliding or swinging as a way of getting baby to sleep.
