Dizziness in early pregnancy

I just jogged up a couple of flights of stairs at work, then had two very lightheaded/dizzy spells, i ended up sitting on the loo with my head between my legs for a few mins to recover, and I still felt a bit shaky 15mins later. I am 5 weeks gone, is this normal?

I don't know about "normal" but I get like this sometimes, both pregnant and non-pregnant.

With me, it's caused by iron levels and low blood pressure.

I would go and see your GP - you might need to have a blood test.

PipCarrier · 08/03/2011 12:42

It's been normal for me in my pregnancy. I have low blood pressure and even now at 26 weeks I'm getting dizzy spells quite often.

Do you have your booking in appointment soon? They'll take your bloods then.

I spent twenty minutes lying on my bathroom floor with the room spinning round me yesterday (like I was horrendously drunk). All I was doing was making dinner! I'm seven weeks today so hopefully, yes, perfectly normal. Have my booking in appt next week so will bring it up with the midwife but a few friends have told me they experienced similar so not too worried unless it starts happening while I'm driving.

Me too, mine was low blood pressure, this has now risen a bit (28 weeks)still low but no longer dizzy.

PipCarrier · 08/03/2011 13:38

I find a sit down, a drink of something like orange juice and maybe a biscuit helps. As well as low blood pressure I think it happens to me when my blood sugars plummet.

argylesocks · 08/03/2011 13:40

i was really dizzy for the first few months and had to take a juice box with me on the train every day so i didn't pass out! it went away after about 9 weeks so i think it's pretty normal.

kirrinIsland · 08/03/2011 14:28

Agreed it sounds like low blood pressure - I had it too. Standing up was a bit of a gamble til I was about 16 weeks!

I too was very dizzy early in pregnancy. Now I'm a lot better - and I'm often dizzy when not pregnant!

The doctors (after saying low blood pressure is really healthy...) go on to say:

  • keep blood sugar up/stable
  • drink lots of fluid
  • don't get up in a rush
  • get plenty of sleep

Make sure you sit down - preferably on the floor or on the bed if you are very dizzy. It is Ok to be dizzy - it is very bad to faint onto a hard floor and then have to go to casualty with concussion!

The Dr also said fainting won't harm the baby - you would have to faint and fall down a flight of stairs or something really dramatic.

this helps yay. not feeling up too eating untill today but think i over did it (only had a ham buttie and two small scone with jam and butter but within half an hour my sugar was through the roof (my mum has diabeties so used her monitor ), the room was spinning and i ended up in bed. which with a 4 year old is near imossiblilty normaly. think i will defo keep that app at the dr tomorrow x i am 11 +2 weeks x
