Early scan at 5+5 - what should/shouldn't they see now?

I had some bleeding last week and my gp has referred me to EPAU today.

I think I am about 5+5. What should they be able to see on a scan by now? And what might it be too early to see?

I had a mmc in Dec and they saw pretty much nothing but a too-small fetal pole at 7 weeks. I just want to be able to prepare myself.

Do not panic if they cant see anything, you are right on the border of being able to see anything, many hospitals will not scan before 6 weeks because of this. I had a scan at 6+1 in this pregnancy and it was just a peanut with a flickering heartbeat, you may be lucky enough to just see this esp if your dates are out at all? Good luck, hope all goes well.

Hi dirge sorry you are going through a stressful time. At 5+5 tbh all they might see is a fetal pole. They arent going to be able to see a hb or tell you if the pole looks big or small, just that it is exists depending on the skill and patience of the sonographer. I had a scan at exactly 6wks and felt quite deflated when all they said was 'there's something there but we cant tell you any more than that'.
Mind you, 'something' is better than nothing. If you can have a scan at 7 wks they might be able to see a faint fluttering of a hb.
The bleeding might be implantation bleeding so dont think the worst yet.
Good luck xx

I had a scan at 6 weeks that showed a sac, nothing more. And it didn't actually rule out ectopic as they explained that you can have a sac develop in the uterus as well as a pregnancy developing elsewhere. Told me nothing tbh and had to go back 10 days later when everything was fine.

I had a scan at 5 + 5 and all I saw was sac as well. I had to go back at 7+2 and then we saw a heartbeat. I hope everything works out ok for you.

Thanks everyone, I was able to read but didn't have good enough connection on my phone to post.

I had an abdominal scan which showed a gestational sac but not much else. I was offered and accepted a vaginal scan where they saw a tiny little yolk sac and a teenie, tiny flicker! The sonographer said its the tiniest baby she's ever managed to pick up a heartbeat on. I go back in two weeks to make sure all is fine.

I am elated, thank you all so much for your replies. It kept me positive in a very stressful wait. Smile

Yay, fantastic news...you have a bean! Now relax for the next 2 weeks...ha ha, easier said than done!

DirgeInVegas · 08/03/2011 13:38

Thanks jasmine, I hardly slept last night so I think I can manage to relax today but perhaps not for 2 weeks!

Oh that's great news - very pleased for you. I'm in a similar situation - mc'd in Novemeber, but now 11 weeks. Saw my wee blob with a heartbeat at 7 weeks, and now can't wait for the 12 week scan next week.

Congratulations!

DirgeInVegas · 08/03/2011 15:40

Congratulations daimbardiva! Enjoy your scan in the next week or so Smile

i was exactly 5w5d when i bled, and had a scan at 5w6d. they only saw a yolk sac and told me to basically prepare for bad news in 2wks when i had to go back. 2wks later they found a foetus with a strong heartbeat!! :) :)
